one likely fix that you can try is uninstalling firefox 44 and installing the 64bit version of firefox instead (a number of other users with the same issue by description said this could fix it for them): https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

Lo and behold, the problem disappeared yet I am not aware of any change I've made to the browser or its environment... this is very strange as up until a while ago the problem was 100% consistent. Experimental Features
