when opening Downloads to clear menu bar disappears, red, yellow and green dot goes away and cannot close unless you force quit Firefox 42.

When I open downloads and try to clear, the page comes up, menu bar goes away and the red, yellow and green buttons in the upper left corner go away. The same thing happens when History button is hit. The only way to get out is to Force Quit.
