Will filters work if Imap messages are already read elsewhere (for example, on an Iphone)?

I have a single filter for new Imap messages. Sometimes incoming mail is not caught by the filter but if I run the filter manually it works. I often read messages on my Iphone first so they show up in Tbird as already read. Is the filter sensitive to the "read/not read" status of the message?
