Just purchased a PC and installed FF. I have a few pages open upon start by default and every time I try to open an additional new tab, the browser crashes. I did the about:config thing and browser.newtab.url is not even listed. I am looking solution or a workaround. Thanks.

hello, could you provide your latest few submitted crash reports? please enter about:crashes into the location bar, copy the latest few report ids from there starting with bp- & paste them here into a forum reply. this will give us a better understanding what may be triggering those crashes.

Thanks for your swift response. Much appreciated! Attached is a screenshot.

The browser.newtab.url pref is no longer supported in Firefox 41 and later, so you can no longer use this to set the new tab page.

You can look at this extension to set the new tab page:

You can set the new tab URL setting via the Options/Preferences of the extension on the about:addons page.

You can look at this extension if you use the home page as the new tab page.

Classic Theme Restorer includes this feature as well. In current CTR versions (1.3.9+) you find "New tab page url" in the Tabs (1) section.

You can use these special pages for the new tab page or use the URL of a web page. the default new tab page with the tiles is about:newtab

  • the default home page is about:home
  • for a blank page you can use about:blank
  • for Super Start you can use about:superstart

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Crashes EVERY TIME when "+" is clicked for New Tab. Hardware accel is off, have disabled extensions, tried reset of defaults and safe mode.

Nothing fixes it. Clicking a link to open in a new tab works fine.

Please advise,

Hi JohnathanStein

Could you please start a new thread for your question?

Then you can provide more information like your operating system and installed extensions and installed plugins.

In case of crashes also please add some recent crash IDs that start with a "bp-" prefix.

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the report ID of recent crash reports on the "Help > Troubleshooting Information" page (about:support).
