hi, every time i have checked back in with my plug-ins for at least the past 3 years, java has been continued to be disabled by firefox. But when i click on "check for updates",

it always just leads me to a page that tells me why it is disabled, not if there is an update, or ever will be.
Is it recommended to just forget about java ever being useful again?

And then what should i do instead, like when a site requires java to work properly? thanks!

Although Oracle is making this hard, I think this is the one you need:

Windows x86 Offline 28.14 MB jre-7u80-windows-i586.exe

From here:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-archive-downloads-javase7-521261.html#jre-7u80-oth-JPR

Now... even though that is the last version supported on Windows XP by Oracle, it's possible that Firefox will at least require site-specific approvals before it can be used. If it's completely blocked, then Java won't be useful for you any more at all.

Windows XP is not supported in Java 8. https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/winxp.xml

And Java 7 Updates aren't available to the public any longer as of April 2015, a year after WinXP went E-O-L. https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_7.xml

See this - How to allow Java on trusted sites - Firefox support article to learn how to activate Java per concurrence at websites.

Personally, I gave up on Java a few years ago on WinXP and got rid of it. With the new PC I built in April with Win7, I haven't yet installed Java and probably won't, especially for Firefox. IMO, Java in Firefox is an "accident waiting to happen" as far as exploits go.
