Has anyone figured out how to stop the AUDIO ads or commercials from constantly tormenting the user?

Windows XP Pro, 4G ram, Norton running, Malwarebytes finds nothing,

I get constantly repeated AUDIO commercials from AARP, some pet food company, Capital One, some ridiculous music bit and some others. Some even run on top of each other. These are so damn annoying. If I want to listen to the audio for a YouTube video these jerks are breaking in to ask "What's in your wallet." It's none of their business.

AARP indirectly denies responsibility for the commercials even though they have heard them when I call. I hold the phone up to my PC speakers. They tell me to clear my cache and cookies. That won't work if their public relations department has hired hackers to advertise for them. They deny they can do anything to stop them.

I terminated my AARP membership due to their arrogance and out right lies. They can put a stop to this nonsense but they don't want to.

Clearing the cache doesn't help. Clearing recent history doesn't help. There is no way to trace the source as there is nothing to see. I tried clicking on the air in front of my speakers but nothing happened.  :) I wanted to add an image of the noise they make to this question so everyone could see what they sound like.

I have filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. That will probably be acted on about the 53 week of next year.

What to do? What to do?

Anyone have a way to stop these insidious, annoying, time wasting, computer resource wasting stupid commercials?

One possibility is that these are just ordinary web page ads, another is that they are injected or played by an add-on.

To try to rule out an add-on issue, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

While you are troubleshooting this, it might be helpful, to avoid unnecessary pain on sites where Flash is not actually essential, try setting Flash to Click-to-Play ("Ask to Activate"). This will delay Flash from starting on a page until you approve it.

To set "Ask to Activate", open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Look for "Shockwave Flash" and change "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate".

With that setting, when you visit a site that wants to use Flash, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and usually (but not always) one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.

The plugin notification icon in the address bar typically looks like a small, dark gray Lego block. When the page wants to use a soft-blocked plugin, the icon turns red to alert you to the concern.

If you see a good reason to use Flash, and the site looks trustworthy, you can go ahead and click the notification icon in the address bar to allow Flash. You can trust the site for the time being or permanently.

But some pages use Flash only for tracking or playing ads, so if you don't see an immediate need for Flash, feel free to ignore the notification! It will just sit there in case you want to use it later.

Not a solution, but hopefully will help a bit.

I should have mentioned that these monsters creep in at any time and on any web site. Even changing web sites does not end the commercial that is running. They are most definitely not related to any one web site. However they do only run when Firefox is running.

Now running Firefox in safe mode. No audio commercials for a day or so. If it is an Add-on where is it? Nothing suspicious shows up in the Add-on list.

could you go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum? this might give us a clue what is going on...

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
