Cannot get emails on IMAP using security

I am having an issue getting emails and synchronizing using IMAP/Thunderbird. I get a message that says that I am connected but it just hangs after that. If I turn security off then I can sync OK. I have someone else in a different part of the country (diffent ISP) using Thunderbird that is reporting the same issue. I have tried port 143 and 993 but no luck. I can send just fine using SMTP.

I have tried restarting the computer, Thunderbird and my router. I have tried Thunderbird with Addins disabled.

I installed Opera Mail to test the server. Opera mail works fine with the same port, user, server settings. It definitely seems to be Thunderbird and not the server.

Any help would be appreciated.
