Trash Icon turns to a folder after messages load

Prior to updating to TB 38.1, I had a Trash folder on my TB gmail imap account that was in the form of a trash can icon. When I deleted a message, it would go there until I emptied trash. After updating TB, the Trash folder is only temporarily a trash icon. Once messages are done loading at startup, the Trash turns from icon to a folder. When it is a folder, messages no longer go there when I delete them. Now they are just gone. I have tried all the fixes I could find including editing the prefs folder in my profile, making sure Trash is subscribed and named correctly and editing my web gmail account. I have reverted back to TB 38.01 but the problem still exists. I finally elected to show the trash label in gmail and am using the gmail trash in TB. This is not how I had it originally set up, however--originally I used my imap trash folder that was displayed directly under my Inbox in TB, not the gmail trash that is in a gmail folder in TB.

Is there really no way to use a TB imap trash folder any longer?
