Thunderbird stops downloading messages after 500 messages and says there are no more messages to download, even though there are over 3000 more messages to get.

There are over 3,800 messages that have built up on my mail server. When I attempt to download the messages, Thunderbird will start and download 500 messages and then will not download anymore. After several attempts to get more messages, TBird will say that it is downloading message 1 of 3,837, but will not download, timesout and says no messages to download.
