Firefox Constantly Crashing since 33.0.3 Update

I know there is another post about this, but the user didn't give too much information, and the "solution" does nothing to help.

I had bunch of tabs open, which I normally do on Firefox without issue, and Firefox automatically updated itself. Shortly after, Firefox crashed while I was trying to access another web page.

Since then, it will constantly crash. If I restart and restore all my tabs, it will normally crash as soon as I try to use a new tab or type in my old ones. If I leave it alone for a while it seems to work for a matter of minutes before crashing again.

I even reset Firefox, but that did nothing for me. It just seems like it wants to crash no matter what I try.

I had just put Firefox as my default web browser (as I had it this way before, but switched to Chrome when too many problems were occurring from a previous update). I had to go right back to Chrome. While I like to keep all my browsers updated, this is simply ridiculous. I have never crashed so many times from doing what a browser is meant to do.

Anyway I can downgrade back to just version 33.0.0 until another version comes out?

@guigs2 - I sent you an email with the memory report attached. Sorry for the late reply.

Another driver update from NVIDIA came the day of my last reply. Since then Firefox has been working decently. It crashed once, and almost crashed yesterday (but just froze and came back). It seems that the more tabs I have open the drastically worse the performance can get...

Every so often, copy the crash reports you have not posted, and send them here.

With alot of help from crashkill, heatshiver there is an add on that is known for piggybacking malware when it downloads. "VeeHD" that looks very suspicious and I would recommend running multiple scanners. When QA replicated the crash with the same listed addons, this add on had shortly after infected the test computer and caused Firefox to crash.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you (and crashkill) for continuing looking into this problem. But I do have some additional notes.

The first is that I got a recent driver update from NVIDIA and since then Firefox has not crashed. It has lagged at times and even froze for a few seconds, but has continued on since that driver update.

The second would be that I do not think VeeHD is the problem. I do agree that it can contain malware, and I do use many of the mentioned software to get rid of malware. However, I have not had to use it for that purpose. Furthermore, I installed VeeHD after the NVIDIA driver update. I rarely use VeeHD, but do on occasion. I normally uninstall it and only install it when I need it.

I had not mentioned the NVIDIA driver update beforehand because I wasn't sure that would fix it, but it has seemingly at this point. I have several tabs open, as I normally do, and they have all been working.

Beyond the lags and freezes, the only other noticeable quirk is that sometimes I will click on a tab and it will act as though I am still on the previous tab. Little bits of the current tab show through, but I have to minimize then maximize the Firefox window before it realizes and shows the correct tab I am on.

If there is anything else you would like me to do, I am willing. But I think the focus lies on the NVIDIA drivers...

You can try to disable OMTC and leave hardware acceleration in Firefox enabled.

  • about:config page: layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled = false

You can check for issues caused by plugins and set all plugins to "Ask to Activate" on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" page (plugins are not affected by Firefox Safe Mode)

You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:

Every once in a while, check that all of your programs, drivers, and every thing else is up to date. There are some utility programs that can keep you informed of updates.

But never, Never, NEVER do an update using links in a pop-up or e-mail. While the could be real, they might also be mal-ware.

The best place it check for any updates is the home site of that program.

@cor-el - I'll try the first option once I get a chance.

@FredMcD - I never download items from emails unless they're from friends or family and they have told me about it beforehand. The NVIDIA updater comes with their official drivers and lets me know when a new update is available. The only other drivers I ever check on are for my motherboard from the manufacturer's official site.

Thanks again, everyone.

Okay, so Firefox finally had enough (again) and crashed. The same symptoms I noted before apply.

I had open around 26 tabs on the first crash, it was lagging and freezing just before it went down. I reopened Firefox and got down to about 14 tabs, and it was okay for a bit. I opened up about 4 more tabs before it crashed again. I then reopened with just 10 tabs, and now it won't allow me to open another tab before crashing...

I did attempt to copy the crashes, but Firefox crashed before I could even copy anything. I performed the update to 34.0 and was able to copy the following:

I will test out the new update for a few days and report back with any new information.

See if there are updates for your graphics drive drivers https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile to check if your current profile is causing the problem. See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

So far the update has not helped... I am attempting to uninstall Firefox but the "wizard" won't start. I'll try a reboot and then give it another go.

If you can't uninstall the old Firefox, try this;

Download Firefox Full Installer For All languages And Systems {web link} Save the file. Then;

Close Firefox. Using your file browser, go to your Programs folder. Rename the Firefox and Mozilla folders by adding .old to them. Now run the full installer.

So, looks like uninstalling and reinstalling h ad no effect.

I went ahead and rebooted the computer, but the uninstaller would not pop up for Firefox (listed as 30.0)... I used some professional software to try to uninstall it, but it could not do it either. I was able to uninstall the maintenance service without an issue.

I went ahead and deleted the folder from my drive and used two registry cleaners to delete anything remaining, since I had no other choice. I then downloaded and installed Firefox 34.0.5. Once it started up, and as soon as I tried to use a third tab, on came the lag then the crash...

Not sure what else is left to try. Waterfox seems fine. I have Chrome open with numerous tabs and no issues.

I hop you all don't mind I pop up in the discussion. 1 - When you say you have uninstalled an re-installed Firefox, did you completly clean-up everything about Firefox between ? I mean, profile, addons, registry keys, etc. Cause if there was something corrupted about your old firefox, it could still be there with the new one if not erased between. 2 - About security, do you use programs like Hijackthis, that are speciallized to find every programs installed on your computer ? That would be a good complement to other security programs. 3 - To be sure about compatibility, do you have the time and energy to downgrade your gpu driver and Firefox, to see if the problem is still there, even if you're back to a previous situation where you didn't have problems ?

Post your latest crash reports

I have done all of the above and firefox is still crashing! Never had this problem before or had it crash constantly. Sites I used to go on with no problem, soon as you go to it firefox crashes. This is getting really old. I have turned of acceleration, did command prompt etc...nothing corrects the problem. I love firefox and don't want to switch but if this problem is not corrected soon I will have too!
