Can you explain what you mean by a new tab opens with Advertisements? That is not a feature in Firefox. What was the newtaburl pref set to before you set it to blank? The default is to have your 9 most visited sites appear, is that what you were seeing?

i think it was about:newtab before. And it most definitely IS a firefox thing - google it. eg: http://www.engadget.com/2014/05/12/firefox-new-tab-ads/

I just set it back to "newtab", but recieved some updates as well. Now its stopped doing it. Old version maybe?

I think the update stopped this behaviour, as we allowed updates on other pc's and they've stopped this aswell.

The sponsored tiles are just experiments at this point, and aren't in release Firefox, so unless you were running pre-release Firefox and it was a brand new install with no existing profile data, then that definitely wasn't what you were seeing. Maybe try Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware to double check there is no malware on your machine.

"Sponsored tiles" vs "ads" may be "splitting hairs" as to the differences, but the content of the "tiles" is coming from Mozilla servers, not from other content delivery networks as true advertisements normally do.

Basically, only new users of Firefox who don't any browsing history yet will see those sponsored tiles, rather than seeing blank tiles as with previous versions; along with users who clear their browsing history either manually, or automatically as Firefox closes.

If you have "history" you won't see the sponsored tiles.

the-edmeister you're forgetting that not everyone keeps their history stored after each session. For example when Firefox closes you can clear your search history.

And you can argue about the minute difference of 'sponsored tiles' vs 'ads'. But the 'sponsored tiles' is just an euphemism fore Advertisement.

Mozilla receives benefits for placing the tiles. So a company would go along with Mozilla's advertisement plan and hen Mozilla adds it to their servers to be pushed to their users.

You state that Mozilla's 'sponsored tiles' are not behaving like 'true content delivery' or 'true advertisement'. But Mozilla made itself an 'advertisement delivery system'.

Pay Mozilla money, they put your desired material on their server, they push it to users.

By saying it's gone when you visit enough pages, does not change the fact that it's advertisment.

I see the damn unwanted tiles every day now, some are even animated (still think it's not behaving like advertisement?)

For me it feels like advertisement before I had addBlock. Visiual banners, with even animation.

No wonder Firefox's user base keeps shrinking.
