I noticed that my thunderbird was crashing way more often than it used to (it actually never really crashed on me much). I finally realized that the common factor was to view an attachment - jpeg or pdf. I did the usual testing, running in safe mode, clearing the msf files and even trying a different profile - none of these made any difference. I can save an attachment by dragging it off to the desktop but when I view it (instead of saving) there is a noticeable delay before the item is displayed and after about 2-3 seconds TB crashes. When I start it again the preview pane for messages is on - which I normally have turned off with F8. At about the same time these crashes started to happen sometimes after windows start my TB comes up without the left folder pane showing and I have to close it and restart to be able to use it. Second start always succeeds.v Any help would be greatly appreciated because this is driving me crazy.

Go to Help menu (alt+H) >troubleshooting information

Scroll down to the crash reports and click on a couple of the crash ids. and paste the resulting browser links to a message here.

In the interim you might run the disk cleanup utility on the start menu under Accessories> system tools. It may be your temp folder is a mess and the tools will fix that. Crashing of programs usually starts around the 10,000 orphaned files in the temp folder mark.

Thanks for the reply, Matt! I tried several version of TB and the problem appeared on all of them. One of the crash report with the latest version of TB is https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/2559c3e8-e22e-4458-8fbe-0e2582140804 In the meantime I found out that my firefiox installation shows the same behavior: I click on a link (for example a MS doc file) and the answer the dialog save/open with with open in MS Word, MS Word starts and displays the file and shortly thereafter FF crashes. This again is a behavior that only recently started to occur. I did clear the temp folder and download history, and that made no difference.

I mentioned above that I now noticed that firefox crashes under very similar conditions, here is the crash report for that crash: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/06fa3d1c-349f-47f6-8e43-59bc92140811

Anything else I can do to get this problem resolved? I hope I do not have to reinstall windows to get this handled, though "-(

The problem went away with a new version of windows - so it is obvious that was some nasty interaction with another program - the return of dll-hell?

I do not think DLL hell ever really went away :(

But I have certainly suggested it in this bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1042637
