Why can't I add email accounts

Several days ago when I opened Thunderbird, no emails or email accounts appeared (I have three email accounts). I was able to add my primary email account; however, Thunderbird opened a new local directory for it, which I did not want. I reset the local directory to my old one. So far so good.

When I tried to add the other two email accounts, I was unsuccessful. When I click File - New - Existing Mail Account I get a Mail Account Setup window; however, the Email address and Password boxes are grayed out and do not permit entries.

What happened? How do I access my other two email accounts?
