Bookmarks disappeared after installation of Firefox 39

Bookmarks disappeared after installation of Firefox 39 on OSX Yosemite, and using TimeMachine backup to replace "places.sqlite" with an older version of the file has done nothing. When I import my JSON backup fileinto Firefox, what I see are many empty folders (correctly named) but no actual bookmarks. I've deleted the folders, disabled all add-ons, restarted Firefox, and then gone through the process again, but no positive results. So for now, I'm operating without my old bookmark library.
