Customize the New Tab page

Firefox's default behavior is to display top sites on the New Tab page. Learn how to customize this page by pinning, removing sites or rearranging these sites.

Note: To turn off the New Tab display, see Hide or display Tiles in New Tab.

Pin a Tile

pin tile 40

Click the pin icon in the top-left corner of the Tile to lock it in that position on the page.

Tip: Set up Firefox Sync to sync your pinned Tiles across your other computers.

Remove a Tile

remove tile 39

Click the "X" in the top-right corner of the site to delete it from the page.

Note: If you accidentally remove a site you can get it back by clicking Undo at the top of the page. For several removed sites click Restore All.

Rearrange Tiles

move tile 40

Click and drag a Tile into the position you want. It will be "pinned" to its new location.

Add a Tile from your bookmarks

You can also open the bookmarks library and drag bookmarks to the New Tab page.

  1. Before you begin, set Firefox to remember history. See Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track.
  2. Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks-29 and select Show All Bookmarks to open the Library window.
  3. Drag a bookmark into the position you want.

I've seen this requested by users and mikira proposed it as an addition to the article:

This should be an additional section called "Make the New Tab page the Firefox home page" This can have the same instructions as making it blank but with the value being about:home instead of about:blank. about:home will only show the Firefox home page not any "home page" that you've specified in the preferences. You could do that here though, for example, using google.com instead of about:home

I would like to have the option of opening a new tab that shows the Firefox home page, because I now open a tab and get an unwanted advertizing web home page, which I cannot get rid of under the "Tools" options.

Need to update for Firefox 33.

See this screenshot and the About Tiles in New Tab related discussion threads.

Hello Alice, I'm using Fx 33 (I use the beta channel since some time as my default version) and if I click on the gear icon I don't get any menu but simply the tile grid is hidden and get the blank page.

In Aurora and Nightly (currently version 34 and 35) the behavior is the same described in the article. Will this change apply to the next beta versions?

Thanks

Hi. See /kb/how-do-tiles-work-firefox/discuss/5504 Where/what countries are tiles being served? (Enhanced and Directory). Also need to update when Fx 33 is released

I'm thinking you're not seeing the screenshot I posted for Firefox 33 Beta because your Firefox version is not en-US.

underpass

Hello Alice, maybe a note should be added and/or should exist a different page for non en-us countries.

Joni already updated the article for fx33 on Sept 19th and marked it ready to localize. If you want to add a note with separate instructions for non-US countries I think you should make a revision and let it be reviewed.

I apologize for missing this thread. Thanks, Underpass, for bringing this to my attention.

Underpass and other localizers, what do you think of replacing the en-us screenshot with one from your own locale? If you need help editing the image, please let me know.

While the Directory Tiles are coming to other locales eventually, it looks like it's not happening in the next few releases after all. I'll put a comment in the article so localizers know to omit references to Tiles. Sorry about the timing!

Joni

Edit: I just realized I thanked Michele instead of Underpass for showing me this thread. I had been working with Michele on a few articles, so I typed his name out of habit.

underpass

Hey Joni ;)

Thanks for your answer. I was more worried about the content than the screenshot. I mean, if I leave the article as it is now in the en-us form there will be for=fx33 blocks describing features that will not be in version 33.

My idea - just to avoid working too much - is to temporarily substitute all the for=fx33 blocks with for=fx34. If tiles will not be included in version 34 I will change it to fx35 and so on.

What do you think?

Hi Underpass,

I think that's a good workaround for non en-us locales. We can check on Oct 14 (when fx34 Beta arrives) to see if the feature is available in other locales.

Thanks for the suggestion. Joni

It is a good workaround indeed, but if we change the for=fx33 with for=fx34 then the Firefox en-US owners looses the information for the specific version (en-us).

I think it is better to add a note as Underpass said above and Alice urged above also.

thanks

Hi ideato,

I agree with you. I meant that we'd only make these changes in the non en-us locales, but we'd keep the {for fx33} instructions for en-us.

I'm hesitant to write notes with specific instructions for non-English locales because this feature might not be available to all locales in fx34. Instead, I've added hidden comments for contributors, so they can check fx34 on a per-locale basis to see if this applies to them. Ultimately, I'll leave it to the locale leaders to decide if they want to document it at this point.

When we get to fx34 or fx35, I hope this feature is consistent and easier for all of us to document.

The "How do I turn the new tab page off?" changes made for Firefox 33 will need to be reversed. See:

Bug 1073823 - Turn off enhanced tiles for all Firefox 33 users

Cornel Ionce [QA] 2014-10-03 06:50:34 PDT
Verified fixed on Windows 7 64-bit, Mac OS X 10.9.5 and Ubuntu 12.04 32bit using Firefox 33 beta 9, build ID: 20141002185629.
Tested with the following locales: en-US/ach/de/es-ES/fr/ja-JP/pl/pt-BR and ru - the enhanced tiles is disabled.
Clicking on the gear button from about:newtab will toggle the page to blank and back.

I tested in Firefox 33 Beta 9 just now and verified that clicking the "Gear" icon toggles the newtab page to blank and back.

P.S. Reading Bug 1073823 it looks like enhanced tiles will be turned on for everyone in Firefox 34:

[Tracking Requested - why for this release]: Sounds like we're moving Enhanced Tiles to Firefox 34

I made a revision to reverse the changes made for Firefox 33, that's pending review. Rather than update now for Firefox 34 I think we should wait and see. I already set up a "Need changes" entry for Fx34.

Joni approved it (Thanks, Joni).

Firefox 34 is on beta channel now. We should make the changes again.

Filed bug 1082051.

This bug was recently fixed: Bug 1082051 - Enable enhanced tiles for desired locales on 33

This article needs updating to add back the information on how to turn off tiles in Firefox 33 and above.

I made a new revision to update the "How do I turn the New Tab page off?" section for Firefox 33.

Artist

This article still claims the Google search on the about:home page, which should be altered at least for the US-Version. I also wonder if it's a good idea in the US-version to promote google.com here as "your preferred home page", see:

Alternately, you can change it to about:home for the Firefox Google home page, or type in your preferred home page, for example google.com.

Maybe the Firefox home page part could include a comment/alert for localizers to insert their local default search engine name or re-write this part in a rather vague manner for general worldwide use.

As for the preferred home page - either the same as above or simply remove the example part.

thank you

Hi Artist,

Thanks for bringing this up. We should remove references to Google or any other search engine in the text, unless we're referring to a default option in the UI.

I'd do the same for other locales. I'll edit this so it's more generic.

Thanks again, Joni

The "How do I turn the New Tab page off?" section - needs an update. it currently shows this image for fx33 and above:

tiles off 33

Here's what I see in Fx39 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/gallery/image/22543

Here's what I see in Fx40 Beta: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/gallery/image/22546

Here's what the About Tiles in New Tab article shows under the How do I turn it on/off? section (notice the {for fx39} block is showing this image: [[Image:tiles controls 39]] ... which is what I see in fx40)

How do I turn it on/off?

{for not fx39} You can turn off Enhanced Tiles by clicking on the gear icon on the top right corner of the new tab page, and selecting {menu Classic} to show only unenhanced History Tiles or {menu Blank} mode, which turns the Tiles off.

classic mode blank mode gear tiles

{/for} {for fx39} You can turn off Suggested Tiles by clicking on the gear icon on the top right corner of the new tab page, and removing the checkmark next to Include suggested sites.

tiles controls 39

To remove all sites from the New Tab page, click Show blank page. {/for} See Customize the New Tab page to learn more about customizing the New Tab Page.

For fx41 Also need to remove the about:config instructions for modifying the browser.newtab.url preference.

There's already a SUMO article at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites#w_how-do-i-turn-...

Who do we need to reach out to, to ensure the paragraph starting with "You can also turn this feature off completely" gets removed (at least for Firefox 41+) ?

The above also applies to the new article Hide or display Tiles in New Tab that's pending review.

NotR

The article explains using "Undo" for a tile you've just deleted. It mentions "Restore all," but it doesn't tell how to find it. When I open a new tab and can't find a tile, there is no "Restore all" link available until I delete another one. Instead of:

For several removed sites click Restore All.

How about this?

To get back sites you removed previously, remove another site and then click Restore all at the top.

The link to Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page is no longer needed since the related bug was fixed in Firefox 41.
