Import bookmarks from Google Chrome

Firefox lets you easily import bookmarks and other data from Google Chrome. This article gives you step-by-step instructions for getting it done.

  1. Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks-29 and select Show All Bookmarks to open the Library window.
  2. From the toolbar in the Library window, click f60cc26c38fc04cce87eb6ea6ec8c400-1259975468-619-1.png Import and Backup and choose Import Data from Another Browser...
    Chrome Win 1
Note: If you are in Private Browsing mode, Import Data from Another Browser... will be disabled (greyed out). In that case, turn off Private Browsing and try again.
  3. In the Import Wizard window that appears, select Chrome, then click NextContinue.
    Chrome Win 2
  4. Firefox will list the types of settings and information it can import. Select the items you want to import, then click NextContinue.
    Chrome Win 3

There are two revisions in pending review, one with a not yet approved template, one with no template, with no agreement on which one to choose.

I approved the revision without the template since extra work for localizers is no longer an issue. We can always add a template later if one is approved.

This article needs to be updated for Firefox 11 -see /forums/knowledge-base-articles/708129#post-45101 Firefox 11 Updates

Here's a list of new features and the articles that need to be updated for Firefox 11. The goal is to have these completed by February 14th so that localizers have enough time to update them before the release:

Chrome migration

We now have a proper way to import bookmarks, history and other settings from Chrome. More info.

The MozillaWiki article (linked from "More info") includes these related bug reports:

I don't have Google Chrome installed so I won't be updating this article but.... I wanted to mention that "Import Data from another browser" will be greyed out in Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode so the article should include a note to that effect, similar to the one I recently added to Import Bookmarks from Internet Explorer.

The "#w_how-do-i-turn-off-private-browsing" anchor links to How do I turn off Private Browsing? in another articles which is inside a for not fx20 so it doesn't work in newer versions.

I don't think the Private Browsing note applies any longer. This is copied from the "Updates for Fx 20" thread in the Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history discussion forum: Michael Verdi said

Firefox 20 introduces per-window private browsing. This article was updated to account for that and new screenshots for all OSs were added. Notable changes:
  • There isn't a "How do I turn off Private Browsing?" section for Fx 20 since that no longer applies.

I opened a new Private Browsing window in both Firefox 24 ESR and Firefox 31 and "Import Data from Another Browser..." was NOT disabled. It worked just fine importing from Internet Explorer (I don't have Chrome installed) so I removed the note for fx20 and above. I left it pending review in case anyone else wants to check it.
