Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

about:blank (a blank page),
or you can enter any web page you want.
The same instructions are used for the new window setting, listed as browser.startup.homepage.
You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.
I tried all the options you suggested and still the offending tab re-appears. What I did do though, was to delete all of the tabs I have set up opened a new tab. This loaded the offending tab and the address below came up in the address bar.
That looks like a directory link, not a web page. Open and check your plug-ins and add-ons for something you don't know. Then check out Windows > Control Panel > Remove Programs and check it also. Finally;
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
