Unresponsive Script Error when loading Facebook news feed

I've been having this problem for a month now - using FF 23 and Windows 7, I will frequently get an "unresponsive script error" when trying to access/load my Facebook news feed. I've cleared the cache, removed cookies, disabled add ons, increased the "hang time", etc. but NOTHING has worked so far. I noticed that the "Java Deployment Toolkit" add on is automatically disabled by FF because it is "vulnerable". Anyone out there know if this add on has anything to do with the problem?? It's been suggested to me to try the "Java Quick Starter" add on for Firefox, but I can't locate it. I'm suspicious the problem has to do with java.

Re: Unresponsive Script Error when loading Facebook news feed

The Java Quick Starter extension was only used on Windows XP to load Java on startup and doesn't apply to this case anyway.
To avoid confusion:

Is this when you are logged on to Facebook.

If you can access this page when not logged on, does this still happen?

Does accessing this page in a Private Browsing mode window has any effect?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the aboutSmiley Tongueermissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make a note of those passwords and bookmarks.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.

It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Re: Unresponsive Script Error when loading Facebook news feed

Notes gathered from your posts in another thread (please correct/update as needed):

  • Only happens in ONE of my FB profiles, and only when trying to load the news feed, not the profile page.
  • Disabling extensions, clearing the cache didn't help. I've also deleted all FB apps. Clearing the cookies will work for awhile, but then the newsfeed will stop auto-updating, and when you try to reload the page, it freezes and pops up the "unresponsive script" error.
  • Removing the FB cookies and then disabling the Flash plugin works.
  • Disabling Flash protected mode did nothing.
  • I don't believe this is a FF issue as this problem will duplicate in Chrome.
  • I don't have Avast Script Shield (or any other script add-ons).

It seems there is some interaction between saved data (cookies) and the Flash plugin and FB scripts. Chasing down the precise interaction seems a little difficult or FB probably would have worked around it by now.

One aspect of cookies is the difference between standard HTTP cookies stored by Firefox in its own settings folder, and "Flash cookies" stored through Flash. You could experiment with disabling Flash local storage and see whether that makes a difference. Note: this probably will break Flash-based games.

You can manage those site-specific settings here:

Re: Unresponsive Script Error when loading Facebook news feed

the problem is the flash player, not firefox. To fix the problem:

1. to go to a website that have a flash video, such as youtube 2. right click on the video then select "global settings", this will open up the flash player setting manager 3. click on the advance tab 4. under "browsing data and settings", click "Delete All".

that is it , u will notice firefox wil run smoothly once again. if after some time firefox slow responding again, just do the same thing to fix it. goodluck!!!

Re: Unresponsive Script Error when loading Facebook news feed

There are updates available for both Java plugins in Firefox.

Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the Mozilla Plugin Check site.

Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions. If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow Update button or a red Update now button, please update these immediately.

To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.
