The thumbnails on the New Tab page are missing - how to get them back

The Firefox New Tab page shows pictures of the sites you visit frequently. Sometimes, some or all of these images are not displayed. We'll explain why that happens and how to get them back when it's possible.

Turn on the New Tab page

To turn on the New Tab page, click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the page and choose Show your top sites from the menu.

Make Firefox create new images for the New Tab page

The new images will be stored as you use the New Tab page to visit those websites again.

  1. Open the New Tab page by clicking the + button on the tab strip.
  2. Click on one of the blank images to open the corresponding website.
  3. Important: Let the website finish loading (wait for the spinning blue loading icon in the tab to stop).
  4. Open the New Tab page again and you will see a new image for the website you just went to.
  5. Repeat this process for the rest of the missing images.
Note: Some websites don't allow images to be generated and saved so they'll show up blank even after doing the steps above. Also, clearing your browsing history (either manually or automatically when Firefox closes) will delete the images.

The content and title lead you to believe this a fix for a bug where the thumbnails aren't showing up, when this is just a "there are no thumbnails yet because of cache" issue.

I can't get thumbnails to show up regardless of my cache, so this article left me thinking it was one thing when it was another.

If the browser.cache.disk.enable pref is set to false, the thumbnails will not load either. We should consider adding this to the article.

The Enhanced/Classic/Blank options accessible from the Gear icon is en-US only. See this related discussion thread and the comments by underpass:

"The thumbnails on the New Tab page are missing - how to get them back"

The slug for this article is: thumbnails-new-tab-page-are-missing-how-get-them-b

It should be fixed to remove the trailing -b so I'll change it to: thumbnails-new-tab-page-missing-how-get-them-back

Done.

As I was editing this article to shorten the search summary, purge pre-fx45 content and other small changes I noticed that it needed to be updated for UI changes in Firefox 40. See this thread in the Customize the New Tab page article:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-new-tab-page/discuss/6195 [fx39, fx40, fx41] How do I turn the New Tab page off? - needs updates

I took the following image from that article discussion to use in this one:

I made a new revision to remove the following warning from the top of this article:

{warning}Important: If your New Tab page has been unexpectedly changed to display a website, see Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page.{/warning}

This warning was related to the following bug, which was fixed in Firefox 41: Bug 1118285 - The browser.newtab.url preference is abused and should be removed
