Firefox is slow - How to make it faster

What good is that super fast Internet connection when your browser is running at dial-up speed? This article will point you in the right direction to track down and fix the problem. Of course, if you need extra help with any of this, we have a community of volunteers standing by.

Note: The Refresh Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Consider using it before going through a lengthy troubleshooting process.

Update Firefox

We're constantly improving Firefox. The latest version is faster than ever before and contains fixes for many problems that could slow down your Firefox. See Update Firefox to the latest version to learn how to update.

Check if you have malware on your computer

Optimize Windows

Speed up Windows and make your computer work better. See Maintenance tasks that improve performance at microsoft.com.See Optimize Windows 7 for better performance at microsoft.com.See Performance & maintenance - Windows Help at microsoft.com.See Optimize Performance of Windows 10 at tenforums.com.

Block unneeded content

There are many Firefox add-ons that can make pages load faster by blocking content you don't need, such as trackers or ads.

  • The Disconnect add-on blocks invisible webpage parts that track you online.
  • The Flashblock add-on allows you to selectively enable and disable Flash content on websites.
  • The NoScript add-on allows you to selectively enable and disable all scripts running on websites.

This didn't solve my problem. What do I do now?

Sometimes tracking down the source of these kinds of problems is difficult. We have a community of volunteers ready to help you figure it out.

I had this problem, and found that the below, cut the start up time (from scratch) from about 25 seconds to less than 10 seconds.

Both of these can be done from in Tools/Add-ons

1. Check and see if you have the Skype Extension enabled - if so disable it (This gave me the greatest improvement btw)

2. Check how many Java consoles are enabled - disable all except the latest version.

Hope this helps someone as this problem was driving me crazy!!

KECD

I had the same problem on the beta version 8,9,and now 10, tried all the usual trouble shooting ideas. What work for me cutting start up time from 30 seconds down to 10 seconds:go in options/advance/network/settings .I changed my settings to NO PROXY instead of system proxy and after i rebooted a couple of times it has settled down.It was a pain starting but now is OK overall Firefox leaves Explorer 9 standing.Hopes this helps someone.

Sorry for the late answer but this forum wasn't monitored until recently.

Buzza, there is already a link to Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems.

KECD, are you sure that "No proxy" is faster than "Use system proxy settings" (default setting)? Can you check it now?

I have a revision pending to remove "features" and [[Tracking Protection on Firefox|Built-in tracking protection]] under "Block unneeded content".

The Tracking Protection in Firefox article was archived, most likely by Joni because of the new Tracking Protection in Private Browsing feature in Firefox 42.

Done.

Thanks :-)

I made a new edit to the Optimize Windows section to have it show for winxp-win7-win8 but I didn't mark it ready to localize yet. That section has no link for Windows 10 and I couldn't find one at Microsoft. Maybe someone else can find a link for Windows 10?

I was thinking, what about if we added a link to a non-Microsoft site like this?

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/26120-optimize-performance-windows-10-a.html

I'll set up a Needs change" entry to review for win10. I would really rather have a Microsoft link.

P.S. If this article is updated we should also update the Firefox takes a long time to start up article, which also has an "Optimize Windows" section.

Done

I got a PM that the tenforums page isn't localizable. I set up this Needs change entry:

"Optimize Windows" section needs a better link for Windows 10, ideally a Microsoft Support article with localized versions.

Correct, if we have a localizable Microsoft Support article then we can change the link.
