I don't want a default browser.

Extract from the article: "If you have more than one web browser, your operating system needs to know which browser to use by default". If you have one browser, it'll be the default one. The only way not to have a default browser is not to have a browser.

Another extract from the article: "To set another browser as the default, use the settings in the browser you wish to be your default."

So I rejected your request to update the article.

I changed this from "How to open Web links on Firefox by default" to a more straight-forward "Make Firefox your default browser". According to analytics, people who searched for "default browser" landed on the Firefox for Android article instead of this one.

+1

By the way, the original title of this article was How to make Firefox the default browser https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/How%20to%20make%20Firefox%20the%20default%20browser

The setting to make Firefox the default browser has been moved from the Options window - Advanced panel/General tab to the Options window - General Panel in Firefox 34. scootergrisen posted about this in another kbforum thread.

The related bug report has the background and reason for this change: Bug 1040868 - Add "Default Browser" check setting to preferences

I'll add this to the Need Changes list.

Here's a screenshot of the new Firefox 34 General Panel on a Mac, when Firefox is not the default browser::

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/gallery/image/20297 Fx34GeneralPanel-Mac

Here's a screenshot of the Firefox 34 General panel on Windows 7, when Firefox is not the default browser:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/gallery/image/20314 Fx34OptionsGeneral-Win7

P.S. Someone else will have to make a Linux screenshot (it can always be added later).

Done. It needs screenshot for Linux and Windows 8.

Thanks. I approved your revision but I didn;t mark it ready to localize. I added "[Fx34] Need screenshots for linux, win8" to the Need changes list.

Alice, Here is the link for Windows 8 Firefox 34 Screen shot FFWin8 Screen shot Hope this is useful :)

I uploaded the above image to the Media Gallery:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/gallery/image/20344 Fx34OptionsGeneral-Win8

I made a new revision to add the Win8 screenshot and approved it. Still need a linux screenshot.

I just marked this article ready to localize, even though it still needs a screenshot for Linux. The Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings article links here and it's been marked ready for L10n.

The button text "Make Firefox My Default Browser" has been changed to "Make Default" in the current Firefox 35 Beta. New screenshots will be needed.

Here's a Windows 7 screenshot: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/gallery/image/20374 Fx35OptionsGeneral-Win7

I'll add this to the Need changes entry.

I made a new revision with Linux screenshot.

Thank you! I approved it as ready to localize.

Maybe we should wait until Firefox 35 is closer to release to update the button text and screenshots. The article was just marked ready to localize for the Firefox 34 change.

My screenshot at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/gallery/image/20374 Fx35OptionsGeneral-Win7 showing the button text "Make Default" was from Firefox 35 Beta 1.

I checked again with Firefox 35 Beta 6 and the button text is now showing "Make Firefox My Default Browser", just like it does for Firefox 34.

I don't know why the text was changed in the first place or if future changes are coming to that button. As of now, nothing more needs to be done so I'll take this item off the "Need changes" list.

Either include Windows 10 instructions in this article or include a link to How to change your default browser in Windows 10 when that article is completed, or do both.

Related discussion and background in the kbforum for the Windows 10 article linked above.

EDIT: I see Joni is working on updating this article for Windows 10. The pending revision comment shows "in progress".

Here's a step-by-step guide to set another browser (in this case, Google Chrome) as the default on Windows 10, in case it helps:

http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-set-google-chrome-as-default-browser-in-windows-10/

I see joni has a new revision with the comment "ready for review - can someone with Win10 check this?

Here's the content of her revision, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/make-firefox-your-default-browser/revision/100495#firefox:win10...

{for fx38} <snip> {for win10}

  1. Tap the menu button new fx menu , then choose {menu Options}.
  2. In the Choose default apps screen, scroll down to Web browser.
  3. Tap Choose a default.
  4. Choose Firefox from the list of Other options.
  5. Tap the {button X} to save your changes and close the window.

{/for} {/for} {note}Note: To set another browser as the default, use the settings in the browser you wish to be your default.{/note}

1. Does the note at the end apply to Windows 10? It shows up when using the Windows 10 selector.

2. Something seems to be missing. Should the instructions mention that after you click (not tap!) on the menu button and select Options, you have to do something in the General panel ... like clicking the "Make Default" button to get the Choose default apps screen? (Thats what the win8 instructions say to do)

3. I don't have Windows 10 but see https://msujaws.wordpress.com/2015/07/18/default-browsers-and-windows-10/comment-page-1/#comment-137... Quote: Daniel 19 July, 2015 at 9:41 am

Which version of Firefox will support this new method? Will it be ready at the release of Win 10? Reply

msujaws 19 July, 2015 at 11:04 am

The first version of Firefox to support this will be Firefox 40, which should be released two weeks or so after the release of Windows 10.

As I read the blog post, "new method" would be opening Windows 10 Settings > Default apps from the Firefox Options panel where you make Firefox the default browser (right now you get this error message?) I think this needs to be {for fx40} and a new section should be written {for not fx40} with manual instructions ... similar to http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-set-google-chrome-as-default-browser-in-windows-10/

P.S. Related discussion: /forums/contributors/711435 Windows 10 and Firefox

Joni has a new revision pending to update this article for Windows 10.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/make-firefox-your-default-browser/revision/100652 is missing content for fx37 and below.

Besides fixing the showfor so that win10 content is visible to users with fx37 and below I also think that the "Note: To set another browser as the default, use the settings in the browser you wish to be your default." needs to be changed for win10. Setting the default browser within the browser's own settings doesn't apply to Microsoft Edge and probably not to other browsers - see https://msujaws.wordpress.com/2015/07/18/default-browsers-and-windows-10/comment-page-1/#comment-136... and the reply:

<deleted>

EDIT: I see Joni already changed the note in her Jul 24, 2015 3:29:16 PM revision, to: {note}Note: To change your default to another browser, see the support documentation for that other browser.{/note}

Regarding showfor and Windows 10: The {for =fx34, =fx35, =fx36, =fx37} block needs a {for win10} section so that content can be shown for Windows 10 users who have those versions. same with the {for not fx34} section if we want those older versions to be supported.

In the last pending revision, the {for win10} {for not fx40} content is under the {for fx38} block of content so it will only show up for fx38 and fx39.

Also, any {for win} content or images will not be shown when the version selector is set to Windows 10, since this bug is still open (replace {for win} with {for winxp,win7,win8,win10} as a workaround?) :

  • Bug 1186464 - Showfor doesn't consider Windows 10 to be Windows

I made a new revision to simply add a missing {/for} right before the new {for win10} {for not fx40} block, so that the content will also be shown for versions previous to Firefox 38. I'll self-approve by July 29 (when Windows 10 is released) if no one has any objections.

I see philipp made a new revision today, which Joni approved. Background:

IRC #sumo log 27 Jul 2015 from http://logs.glob.uno/?c=mozilla%23sumo&s=27+Jul+2015

17:00 philipp jsavage: joni, did you get my ping from before? the current version of the "default browser for win10" article might be wrong for firefox 39... 17:03 jsavage philipp, sorry, yes. just wrapping up meeting 17:05 jsavage checking it out now 17:05 philipp jsavage: this behaviour might have changed since pre-release versions 17:06 philipp i'm using the threshold build 10240 for testing purposes which reportedly is the same that should go live on wednesday 17:06 jsavage philipp, so the settings instructions are the same, but you dont' see an error message? 17:09 philipp when i click on the button to make firefox the default browser within the options on ff39 or before i don't get an error message, but this window opens directly: http://i.imgur.com/c9PmWOT.png 17:20 jsavage philipp, that looks different from the screenshots i've seen 17:21 philipp indeed 17:21 jsavage so you'd pick "firefox" and what happens? 17:22 jsavage that's the screen to pick your default browser? 17:24 philipp on that screen after i click on firefox, i get this http://i.imgur.com/YGP07dh.png where i basically can set firefox as default options for all filetypes and protocols it supports 17:25 philipp that's basically the default app screen from the windows 7 system control panel... 17:28 philipp http://www.trishtech.com/2010/05/setting-default-programs-in-windows-7/ 17:33 philipp jsavage: sorry, it only happens with firefox 38 (esr) & before ^ 17:35 jsavage oh ok, so 39 is as described? 17:35 jsavage ^philipp 17:35 jsavage in the article, i mean 17:38 philipp jsavage: no, in 39 the "make default" button in the firefox options opens the settings>system> default-apps window directly and no error message 17:40 philipp i'm using portable versions of firefox in case this makes a difference (which normally it doesn't) 17:44 jsavage ok, if the default apps window opens directly, maybe the user won't need to look for the sumo article 17:45 philipp maybe a last minute fix by microsoft? 17:45 jsavage so i don't know if we need to change it. let's see what marksc says. 17:46 marksc here, getting caught up 17:47 philipp marksc: do you have a win10 instance at hand? can you double check what happens if you click on "make default" in ff38 & ff39? 17:47 marksc I have the installer, but haven't installed it yet. Give me a few minutes to set up a VM and I'll let you know! 17:48 philipp jsavage: the article may be handy nevertheless, because it's non obvious what to do in the default-apps dialog that users get thrown into after clicking the button 17:49 philipp (especially because the webbrowser button is on the very bottom of that window and may be even out of view unless they scroll down) 17:49 philipp and the firefox 38 "make default" strangeness may need to be documented as well 17:50 jsavage philipp, yeah, we just need to figure out if we need to include that error message, and whether or not we should instruct users to start from the Settings app 17:50 jsavage or just start from the default apps screen 17:51 philipp jsavage: the error message doesn't appear to be there anymore now 17:54 marksc Win10 10240 x64 is almost done installing. I'll test ESR and 39 and report back. 17:54 philipp the good thing in all those default browser setting dialogs seems to be that the settings are listed alphabetically and since we are named just "firefox" we rank ahead of google chrome, internet explorer, microsoft edge and others :-) 18:06 philipp jsavage: could you cc me on bug 1180875, since i'm locked out of there atm? maybe it needs updating as well... 18:29 philipp i just looked at our existing https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/make-firefox-your-default-browser article and it looks like the ff38 experience is just the same as on win8 (which wasn't aware of since i tried to avoid that) 18:29 philipp jsavage: maybe we just need a section for 38 and before & 39 and afterwards - might not be that bad after all... 18:32 jsavage ok, that should work 18:32 philipp and maybe for 40+ if the button should make it in the article 18:32 philipp due to being locked out of the relevant bugs i don't know the progress of this though 18:33 jsavage i hadn't seen any updates on that 18:33 philipp that bit of code would need to ship within firefox itself? 18:34 philipp ...or can it be implemented by sumodev on their own? 18:39 jsavage philipp, i think the button's dependent on some UI functions in firefox and the latter is still being worked on 18:42 philipp ok

EDIT: More from the IRC #sumo log 27 Jul 2015

19:40 philipp jsavage: hey, sorry to bug again with another question - is it on purpose that the kb article view still defaults to windows 8 when viewing with a browser on win10? 19:59 jsavage hey philipp, no, that's a bug 19:59 jsavage i think there's a bug for that. let me check 20:00 philipp merci, if it's known then i'll be quiet already :-) 20:01 jsavage philipp, here it is: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1186464 20:01 firebot Bug 1186464 — NEW, nobody%mozilla.org — Showfor doesn't consider Windows 10 to be Windows 20:02 jsavage and nah, you don't have to be quiet. thanks for helping us keep on top of these things. 20:09 philipp then i'll go on and bother marksc if he has already collected his findings^^ 20:10 satdav jsavage: hey do you have windows 10 on a vm 20:10 marksc philipp I did not get the same default apps window as you using Win10 build 10240. 20:11 philipp on 38 or 39? 20:11 jsavage satdav, i don't. i'm going to try when it comes out 20:11 marksc philipp 39. Installing ESR right now 20:12 philipp yeah, 39 opens the win10 panel 20:12 satdav So in the morning tomorrow jsavage is it 9 am UK it's release or midnight 20:15 jsavage satdav, it's on the 29th, but i don't know what time. 20:16 philipp satdav: here's a countdown: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsforbusiness/default.aspx 20:16 AlexLikeRock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgwT2Ti0c24 20:46 marksc Ah okay, I thought you were posting 39 screenshots earlier philipp- but those were ESR screenshots, right? 20:46 marksc Done testing and screen capturing ESR and 39. Going to try beta now. 20:49 philipp marksc: yeah, the 38 esr screenshot is the same as the steps on win8: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/make-firefox-your-default-browser#firefox:win8 20:50 philipp i wasn't aware of that originally 20:50 philipp but they don't trigger the error message that is referenced anymore, so ms seems to have fixed this just before the release 20:51 philipp error message -> https://msujaws.files.wordpress.com/2015/07/gotosettings.png 21:13 FNK Hi guys, Do you know who contact or how should I report any bug seen in the new community hub tool? 21:17 philipp normally madalina, but she is out ill... 21:18 philipp what kind of bug is it? 21:31 Noah FNK: hey Pablo! I know what bug you're talking about. I'll file it ;) 21:34 FNK philipp Noah I'm talking about when you goes into the new community hub tool it is filtered by language and the last month by default. If you change the filter period the language filter stops working but in the select field is still selected your language. 21:37 FNK Noah if you file it in bugzilla or somewhere share with me the link please 21:38 Noah FNK: sure, will do :) 21:42 philipp jsavage: i've now updated the https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/make-firefox-your-default-browser article with what i believe is the behaviour we will get in windows 10 21:48 jsavage cool, looking now, philipp 21:49 FNK philipp one question, you have added changes to the windows 8 version. Should it go just in the windows 10 version? 21:51 philipp the win8 section shouldn't have changed 21:51 philipp we can reuse part of it for firefox versions 38 and lower though, since the behaviour stays the same there 21:52 jsavage looks good, philipp. thanks for updating this. 21:52 jsavage i'm just going to change that screenshot with the list of browsers 21:53 philipp i can make a new screenshot 21:54 philipp jsavage: http://i.imgur.com/C3VTINT.png 21:59 jsavage nice 22:02 philipp actually the appstore icon is off... 22:02 philipp hmm i might have found a windows bug there, but won't bother to report this ^^ 22:10 philipp there are a lot of offtopic questions in the forum today :-/# 22:10 philipp my favorite one: having problem faxing on my I phone https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1074488 22:11 satdav rolandtanglao: hey https://quality.mozilla.org/event/firefox-for-android-testday-tuesday-11th-august-2015/ would you be free that day 22:13 reedlepee Hii 22:16 FNK Another thing, Do we have a list of known issues of Firefox 39 with Windows 10? All the bugs I've seen in the post created in the contributor forums are related with setting it as default browser. Something else? 22:18 FNK philipp, Noah? 22:18 Tyler FNK: there are a bunch of bugs around windows 10's theme 22:19 FNK ok thanks Tyler for the info 22:19 philipp Tyler: do you know if these fixes may be backported into esr? 22:20 philipp (fixes from 40) 22:22 FNK it would be nice to know workarounds on that issues yes haha 22:23 philipp btw, tyler: has https://useradvocacy.mozilla.org/ gone public recently? if so thank you for sharing some data! 22:26 Tyler philipp: I don't believe they will be back posted to ESR. But most ESR users won't be updating to 10 right away anyway lol 22:26 Tyler philipp: it went live awhile ago :) I know some stuff is still private but we wanted as much as possible public 22:27 philipp great, default to open :-) 22:27 Tyler FNK: the workaround is use beta or wait for 40

P.S. See also /forums/l10n-forum/711439#post-66250 about the "Set Default Programs" Windows 8 screenshot shown for Windows 10 in Fx38 and below.

I've approved both Alice's and Philipp's revisions. I've also added screenshots and removed the "Settings App" instructions since the error message is no longer appearing.

I'll self-approve it tomorrow afternoon if nobody else has any comments or changes, so we can localize it by Aug. 11.

In the meantime, we still have How to change your default browser in Windows 10 to catch any searches before the July 29th release.

That article is still in the Administration category so it won't come up on searches. Maybe we should link to How to change your default browser in Windows 10 from this article?

The current pending /kb/make-firefox-your-default-browser.../100780

Does have a remark about the the other article. But both articles contain some similar content now. Both will be subject to change.

<!--let's unhide this note when the article is ready-- {note}If your default keeps changing back to Microsoft Edge, see [[Make Firefox your default browser in Windows 10]].{/note}-->

I consider the other article is going to cause confusion with L10N that is going to need watching carefully. they will have a series of article and revisions to monitor.

I think we should keep the alternative "Use the Settings app in Windows 10 to change your default browser" instructions, since that doesn't require Firefox to be open.

We could also put those instructions in the Setting Firefox as the default browser does not work - What to do article, if we remove them from this article.

Yes, because right now the Setting Firefox as the default browser does not work - What to do article does not fit the win 10.

thanks

Suddenly Firefox send me a message as follows: The proxy server is refusing connections Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

*Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
*Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.

I have a Mac OS X Version 10.8.5 I have deleted and reloaded Firefox at least 20 times but I always get the same message again! I have looked at the Firefox support site for hours on end but could not find an answer to my problem and I have tried to contact Firefox support several times but NOBODY answers. I am sorry to say but Firefox has the worst support system. I wish they would have a bettwrmore user friendly contact system. I think that maybe I need a Proxy number, I have my IP numbers, but I can't find a Proxy number. It also says in the Firefox message: *Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. I have no idea who my network administrator is or could be. I also called Apple and they could not help me either. I am at the end of my wits. Please can anybody help me to get my Firefox working again?

Hello Bariebel, sorry but this forum is not the place for getting help with Firefox. In this area contributors discuss for that specific article("Make Firefox your default browser" article).

Please ask again your question in the support forum. See :

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/desktop

thank you

Here's a direct link to a page where you can fill in the details and post your question about how to fix the error, "The proxy server is refusing connections".

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/desktop/fix-problems/form?search=The+proxy+server+is...

Hope that helps. I'll lock this thread.

The "Make Firefox your default browser in Windows 10" article now redirects to this article - see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-change-your-default-browser-windows-10/history/ - so I removed the hidden note in my new revision.
