Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars

The menu button new fx menu gives you convenient access to your favorite Firefox features. Don't like the default arrangement? It's easy to customize. Is there something you use all the time? Try adding it to the main toolbar. We'll show you how.

    • A special tab will open which allows you to drag and drop items in or out of the menu and the toolbar. Feel free to experiment with what works best for you. You can always start over by clicking the Restore Defaults button at the bottom of the screen.

In my edition British English, the menu referred to shows up as customiSe rather than customiZe which is in keeping with the locale.

However I wonder if it shows up in search items, maybe the term customiSe needs to be added as a tag to this article, or whatever you need to do, so that it may be found using both spellings, if searched for from the support pages of a British English user.

Possibly similar considerations would apply to the spellings of favourite vs favorite ( is that word indexed in relation to comparison with IE browsers)

I hope this saves someone a bit of time.

You can show text, icons, or text + icons in FF4 (as in earlier versions), but for Bookmarks, FF3 used to not show icons. I didn't want them in the new version either and this is possible using the userChrome.css file.

http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html

Just go into your Profile folder, then duplicate userChrome-example.css and rename it userChrome.css. Add the settings you want, then restart FF.

Note: "toolbarbutton.bookmark-item" refers to the toolbar bookmarks. ".bookmark-item" with "menu" means the drop-down menus.

There must be a link to the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article in the troubleshooting section.

Hi, all.

I know how to customize the navigation toolbar, but not the bookmarks one, which I use always. It now shows both icons and text, so that only half of what I want to see appears.

How to get rid of the icons or text, please? TY.

It is updated from this revision.

We don't add tricks or hacks for modifying Firefox in KB articles. See Things to consider before creating a new article.

We are going to reject your proposal for this article.

Hi Bandita.

The Bookmarks Toolbar customization is explained in the How do I show and hide the different toolbars? section.

The display of icons and text is described in the Icon appearance options section.

I added the link to the article about malware and changed keywords. It needs review.

I changed the title of the section, approved it and marked it as ready for localization.

I am using firefox 9.0.1, I would like to know, is there a way I can bring the Menu Bar under the Navigation tool Bar?

SweetFacz3913

To reiterate, after many years w/Firefox I still cannot permanently affix the Bookmarks Toolbar nor my preferred selected buttons. All remedies seem to address beginners from "start" w/welcome to Firefox screen, or advice to reset Firefox, which in my case would disable or lose some extensions, etc.

Certainly there must be a prescribed method to keep all set? What am I missing? Currently I must go through the process of opting for the Bookmarks Toolbar and then selecting which buttons I want to appear on the location toolbar and, arrange them precisely the way my OCD demands! LOL. Would love a solution! (??)

Hi Friends, I am very sad as I can't find the download history that I was able to access earlier through the "downloads" toolbar item but with the new FF browser(version 21.0) and with new downloads button with new UI,every day when I close the Firefox browser or I shut down my computer and reopen the next day the download history is getting cleared automatically.

Unlike the old download history where you could click on the download history links and open the file or go to the location of the download folder ,in the new ff that option is gone?

Also,in about:config -

browser.download.manager.retention is set to true
services.sync.prefs.sync.browser.download.manager.retention is set to true

I went to Tools->options->Privacy and selected "Remember History" but still the downloads are not showing. It was such a nice cool feature! I am also using download helper. Is the above problem because of that? Please tell me how can I see the downloads i made in the download history again reappear?

Thanks in advance With Best Regards

This is more of a suggestion/request for future releases. It would be great for Firefox to know a file(s) are being downloaded. So if you accidently quit Firefox (hitting command-Q, instead of command-W - those W and Q keys are so damned close together, lol), it will give you a warning message "You have a download in progress. Do you want to Continue or Quit?". That way your almost finished download, that's been going on for the last 30 min or so, doesn't go to waste, and you don't have to start from the beginning again. Is this possible to include in the coding?

Hello everyone. I am new to this so don't be gentle....

I have a USERS.JS file that I want to distribute to all user profiles on any computer (Windows XP or Windows 7). This is what I am doing right now and it seems to work for a single profile but not all user profiles:

set folder=%APPDATA%\mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ copy ".\users.js" "c:\USERS.js" for /f %%i in ( ' dir /a:d/b "%folder%" ' ) do if exist "%folder%\%%i\." copy /y "C:\users.js" "%folder%\%%i\users.js"

I really need it to search and place the new USERS.JS file for all users not just the user that is logged in at that time.....any suggestions?

Thanks in advance and please do crtique what I have already done.

Cheers

Hello, There was a big error in the edit which is currently available for localization. Revision No: 55928.So whenever any contributor localized the article in other languages, the Error keeps in that localized article. So when submit it, the full article shows only at Firefox 29. In other versions of Firefox, it only shows the "share article" template. The changes is here: Different between 55928 & 58203

So, the current version which is fixed need to come for "available for localization" with importance. Regards Safwan

A few hours ago I began to notice that my ABP was not working, so I went straight to what I though was the source of the issues, then when I couldn't find support on the website I came here. I had to find my way across this maze of a site, and tried looking for people with the same issue, non I found had the strange occurrence. Then I checked to see if the add-on needed some updates, and it was up-to-date then just below I find this "deal2deatiil" I have no idea how it got on there. If you see it remove it! First the texts themselves had bold lettering with a link to adds, then other adds like on Google, then on YouTube. It begins to slow down your browser too. Anyone had this same thing?

"deal2deatiil" REMOVE IT!!!
CreepyJack

Sometimes Firefox crashes and when it starts back, it adds an add-on that adds advertising all over your browser, in the texts on the sides of the websites everywhere. When you see it go to add-ons to extensions then you much removed the randomly named add-on. How can I stop this from happening, I go to YouTube mostly when I'm on Firefox, but besides that I use steam for gaming.

Can I only have the icon and not the words in my Bookmarks Toolbar? Thanks! -Sid

Hello Sid

sorry but this forum is not the place for getting help with firefox. In this area contributors discuss for that specific article ("Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars). :-)

It is better to ask your question in the support forum (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/desktop)

BUT you can right-click the bookmark > Properties > delete/clear anything in the "Name" area > Save and you are OK. :-)

thank you :-)

The 'Bookmark this page' popup differs between Firefox versions for Windows and Linux (Ubuntu). The buttons "Remove bookmark" and "Done" are reversed.. Since I use Firefox in both OS's constantly, switching several times a day, it's confusing. Please correct this inconsistency.

Hi ineuw,
I think you may have mistaken this forum as a place to make suggestions about Firefox. It is not. This forum is for discussion about contributing to the Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars support article.
