I have a sync account but cannot sync my desktop and laptop. The laptop is asking for a recovery key that I can get from the Sync Option on the desktop, however I do not have that option, nor do I have a manage account option, as it states. In fact I don't have a "Firefox" button on my browser and access the sync through Tools > Options, as it says for Windows XP, however I am running Windows 7. I am using Firefox 15.0.1. How can I sync these devices please?
Do you have the orange Firefox menu button or do you have the regular Firefox menu bar with the File, Edit and other menu entries like Tools or are both missing?
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F).
You can check for problems with the localstore.rdf file.
If you haven't set up Sync on the Desktop Firefox version then you do not have a Sync (recovery) key and you first need to set up sync before you can add or pair another device.
Okay, first problem solved thank you. I now have a Firefox button.
I do have a sync account. When I click on Firefox > Options > Sync, I have the option to either set up sync or pair a device. From my desktop, I click Set Up Firefox Sync > I Have an Account. From there it gives me the 3 codes to add to the other device, my laptop. No problems, so far. When I go to my laptop, I click Firefox > Options > Sync > Pair a Device and enter the 3 codes, then click Next. Then it wants me to put in a recovery code, which I am supposed to find in the Sync Options on the desktop. When I click Sync Options on the desktop however, I do not have the manage account option to get the recovery code (see attached screen shot). Also, according to the link you provided above for managing my account, I should have the Manage Account drop down immediately when clicking on the Sync tab from the options window, but I don't have that. What do I do next? I feel like I'm going around in circles.
It is possible that your current Firefox theme doesn't support all Sync panes, so you can try the default Firefox theme (Tools > Add-ons > Appearance) to see if that works better.
Are you already connected to the Sync server (i.e. did you set up sync successfully)?
Because the window with the sync settings in your screenshot is usually opened if you click the Sync Options button on the main sync setup window.
I already have an account, and the instructions given in the first link above take me to setting up an account.
If I go to Firefox > Options > Sync I get a window that has 2 links on it -
-Set up Firefox Sync -Pair a Device
I click on Set up Firefox Sync and there are 2 buttons -
-Create a New Account -I Have an Account
I click on I Have an Account, it gives me 3 codes to put in to another device that I wish to pair.
I go to the other device, select Pair a Device, put in the 3 codes, click Next, then it wants the Recovery Key that I am supposed to retrieve from the 1st machine, however I do not have an Account Manger option anywhere to get this recovery key.
If I am getting the codes to pair a device, I would assume this means I am connected to the server, correct? If I already have an account, why do I not have anywhere to manage that account?
If there are other instructions somewhere on how to do this, please let me know, because I cannot find anything..
1. In you screenshot you are showing a Firefox Sync Setup dialog window - Sync isn't completely or properly set up on that device when you get that dialog.
2. My guess is that when you don't see the Manage Account button and the "Computer Name is at the top of that window, it is because Firefox Sync isn't set up completely.
3. "Computer Name" appears at the bottom when Sync is set up and operational, not the Recommended: Merge ... and Replace.... - Replace .... options as in your screenshot.
So how do I finish setting it up then?
when I click on I Have an Account, it just gives me the code to sync another machine. It's not giving me any other options to complete the set up.
You can enter the account name (email address) and password and the Sync key.
