Text and font in my FF 4 beta is kind of pixelated, blurred and fuzzily. Why ?

All other letters and my desktop font is normal! Hmm, i recently reinstalled win7 x64, and maybe something is wrong with that Smiley Happy But, my display drivers are up to date... I must say that font on most websites are pretty clean (not in Gmail), but their names in tabs and Menu bar is still kind of dimly. The text in the adress bar looks like it is in lower resolution - a little pixelated Smiley Happy

I have tried to fix it by disabling nvidia 3d vision plugin and microsoft silverlight, but none does the trick...any other suggestions ?

thanks

Try to set the pref gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled to false on the about:config page.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/about%3Aconfig

You can also try to disable: Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: [ ] "Use hardware acceleration when available"

yes, thank you! Smiley Wink

And that was really fast answer, wow Smiley Very Happy

Actually, the gfx.font was set to false already...but the hardware acceleration was the problem. It crashed my ff when i tried to uncheck it! But the second time it was ok, after a little struggling with it...

I also tried how things look like with hardware acceleration turned on, and gfx.font rendering true, but it was similar. Only the font was then a little less bolded than before, although still fuzzy.

thanks again, best regards

None of these options worked for me. The fonts still looked fuzzy. The only way I could get things to look normal was with the Anti-Aliasing Tuner add-on. That made the fonts look better than in 3.6. As good as Chrome, in fact.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/anti-aliasing-tuner/?src=api

I set everything to ClearType + GDI Classic. It was a huge improvement. Just make sure to turn hardware acceleration back on, because the add-on tweaks HW settings. If HW acceleration is off, the tuner can't do anything.

The only problem is that the spacing between letters for non-fixed width fonts is now off. The system is apparently trying to keep the exact same pixel width of a line of text while messing with the letters. Which results in variable spacing between individual letters.

Oh, great. So I can't have both hardware acceleration and readable text? Is this going to be a permanent problem of Firefox 4, or is this something that can be fixed?

OK, I give up on this. All of the solutions I've seen either lead to weird spacing between letters or fuzzy fonts. Until Firefox and IE fix this, I am going to stick with Chrome. I love FF, but they drove me away by breaking the most basic feature imaginable - font rendering. FF needs to either move away from DirectWrite or find a way to tune things so that fonts aren't fuzzy.

Why is the 'so called' solution a need to turn off 'so called' features of Firefox 4? I mean were these features not meant to be a part of Firefox 4 to make it better or at least as good as Chrome?

It is a sad time for Firefox when people are saying that Firefox does not compare or is nearly comparable to Chrome. It should be as good or better, or has the bar for quality for Firefox as a browser been lowered?

Like many others I will have to revert back to FF3.6.16 and use Chrome now as my default browser... such a shame as Firefox 4 was meant to be so good.

I solved this problem with Internet Explorer 9 by simply activating the compatibility mode. Is there a compatibility mode in Firefox too? I stick on the 3.6 version until I find a solution
