Can't drag Favicons to toolbar - it just doesn't let me, even though on my identical thinkpad it does work. On this laptop, it turns into a new tab.

Though it works on my other thinkpad (which is identical to this one), yet when i try dragging website Favicons to the overhead toolbar on this thinkpad to use as a shortcut, a circle with a diagonal line displays, and when I try dropping it on the toolbar, a new tab opens up, instead of displaying the mozilla.org Favicon.

So why does it work on my other identical thinkpad, but not on this one? I had bought both of them used. Obviously, some factor on this thinkpad isn't allowing it. Note that this laptop has AVG as antivirus, instead of MSE, and may also have other software differences.

I think it only works if you drop the site on the Bookmarks Toolbar. Despite its name, the bookmarks toolbar can either be on its own row or can be dragged onto another bar. It may be that it was customized differently on the two installations of Firefox.

Thanks so much jscher! That answered my question - I clicked View /Toolbars/ and Checkmarked the Bookmarks toolbar. Bingo!

I now have 4 toolbars up above, usurping my 15" real estate:

  • File/Edit/View/etc.
  • Tabs (which this dummie never uses)
  • Address bar
  • Bookmarks bar

Open the Customize window to set which toolbars to display

  • View > Toolbars > Customize
  • Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout
  • Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up

Do you use the menu bar a lot? If not, you can turn it off and then when you need to access tap the Alt key (or press Alt+f for File, etc.).

If you usually have one only tab per window, you can hide the tab bar when there is only a single tab:

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Tabs

Uncheck "Always show the tab bar"

Bookmarks Toolbar Items was on the Bookmarks Toolbar. I also decided to drag the Printer Icon onto the Menu Bar for convenience.

It would be convenient if there'd be a single Icon which substitutes for: CONTROL-A, CONTROL-C (which i systematically have learned to use all the time, such as right now, to ensure this reply doesn't get lost in the ethers)

The latter isn't so mnemonically rememberable for semi-senile people like me, no matter how often I use the sequence.

Re: Can't drag Favicons to toolbar - it just doesn't let me, even though on my identical thinkpad it does work. On this laptop, it turns into a new tab.

jscher, interesting, I wasn't aware of that, since I haven't had time to dabble in all the bells & whistles.

The trouble i'm finding now, is that if an URL is not listed in the yellow-star dropdown, then it's not draggable to the bookmarks toolbar.

I don't seem to remember that being the case on my other [identical] thinkpad. Rather, on my other thinkpad, my bookmarks are all accessible via a listed dropdown via MenuBar/Bookmarks. By comparison, the URLs which are listed in the current thinkpad's yellow-star dropdown, are not listed under this thinkpad's MenuBar/Bookmarks.

I've also been attempting to REMOVE items from the yellow-star dropdown, yet they refuse to become removed!

Not only that, I hadn't even wanted them to be bookmarked in the first place (they only got that way because I hadn't realized that every time I click the Star, the current page gets bookmarked).

As for the displaying of the MenuBar, i'm used to having it on display, so prefer the status quo.

Responding to yours re: the Tab Bar, I'm too confused regarding customization strategy, because here's what i'm finding confusingly redundant:

  • having both status bar and Tab Bar occasionally displaying the same URL-title.
  • But not only that.
  • The status bar and/or Bookmarks bar can serve as a Tab Bar, can't they?

For example, I can right-click YahooMail on the Bookmarks Bar, and choose to "pin" that open as a Tab. And I can click Weather on the Bookmarks Bar to open it as a new page (or a new window, whereupon a "window-frame" would display surrounding the Weather Bookmark, indicating that the Weather bookmarked-URL is currently an opened window.

I suspect these issues probably were discussed by previous commenters, weren't they?

Unless they're not logically programmable, which can also be the case.

The drop-down autocomplete list below the URL bar actually is a mix of bookmarks (individually marked with a yellow star) and history entries. [Edit: The stars only appear after you start typing something in the address bar] Clicking the star in the URL bar adds the current page to the Unsorted folder at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu. If you want to rescue or delete those, that's where they are.

Use of tabs is a personal preference, and there are many permutations. I tend to open a new window for a different task, and to use tabs in the same window for one task (e.g., viewing the results of one search). I've never actually pinned a tab, so I'm not familiar with that feature.

When you are displaying the classic menu bar, the window title bar does match the active tab. If you switch to the abbreviated menus (orange Firefox button) then that text disappear from the title bar and appears only the tab. There isn't really a status bar in Firefox any more (unless you install the Status4Evar extension).

actually, I find that not to be the case. Upon clicking Bookmarks (in my menu bar), then clicking Unsorted-Bookmarks, I fail to see overstock.com which is listed in my yellow-star-dropdown, and that's just one example. There's more that's in my yellow-star-dropdown, which is not listed under Unsorted-Bookmarks. Furthermore, the REMOVE feature did not work. I wonder if this laptop is bugged with trojans, since it was bought used. The reason I say this, is because when I tried copy/pasting JPG's which were attached to some of my YahooMail emails, they failed to paste to my Desktop. I don't recall that being a problem on my other identical thinkpad.

oops, I don't quite grasp the above..

Actually, as of right now, I see the words CAN'T DRAG FAVICONS superimposed on a blue bar that's above the MenuBar. I see those same words on a Tab below the MenuBar. And again those same words on the Status Bar directly on the right of XP's START-button. As for the Orange Firefox Button, I already tried that button and hated the way it made the Menu Items disappear. I had a mad scramble to figure out how to reinstate the old way. I still think there's no need for such redundancy, since the Bookmarks can double as Tabs, as i mentioned above. And even the Blue Bar at the very top (above MenuBar) can just as easily be merged down onto the Status Bar, while the Exit & Minimize buttons can be placed at the very right of the MenuBar, or the AddressBar

Maybe we are talking about different things. Where is the yellow-star drop-down on your system?
