Firefox Screenshots is a new feature to take, download, collect, and share screenshots. To use it, click on the Page actions menu in the address bar and select screenshots menu icon Take a Screenshot from the drop-down.

Tip: You can also take a screenshot by right-clicking on a page and selecting Take a screenshot.

Firefox Screenshots is a new feature to take, download, collect, and share screenshots. To use it, click the Firefox Screenshots icon Fx55ScreenshotsIcon from the toolbar.

Don't see Screenshots? We are still testing this feature so everyone won't see it. Note: Firefox Screenshots currently won't work in private browsing. We are working to fix this for future releases.

What types of screenshots can I capture?

There are several options for capturing screenshots:

  • Capture parts of a page: When you move the mouse cursor over the page, different parts of the page will be automatically highlighted. Click on the one you want to save.
  • Select a region of the page: Drag or click on the page to select a custom region of the page that you wish to capture. You can change the size and area to be captured using the marker points on the edge of the area.
  • Capture a full page: Select Save full page from the menu in the upper right.
  • Capture the visible part of a page: Select Save visible to save the area of the web page currently visible.

To view all of the screenshots you've captured, click My Shots or click on the Library 57 library icon button from your toolbar and select Screenshots.

How do I save my screenshots?

  • Save screenshots online: Select the Save icon Screenshots Save icon to save the image to the Firefox Screenshots service for access online at a later date. By default, screenshots are saved for 14 days, but you can change this by clicking on the expiry date.
  • Download screenshots as image files: To download the area as an image (.png) file, click the down arrow icon Screenshots down arrow icon fx55 . The file will be saved to the same folder you use as Firefox's default download location.
  • Copy to clipboard: Click the copy button screenshot clipboard to save the image on your clipboard and paste it into another application later.
  • Cancel: To cancel your selection, click on the Cancel icon Screenshots cancel icon fx55 .

How do I edit screenshots?

To annotate or recrop your screenshots, save them to the cloud first by clicking the Save icon Screenshots Save icon . From here, the toolbar will appear. Edit Toolbar

Click the Pen icon to select the Crop, Pen, Highlighter, Add text, or Color Picker options. Toolbar

How do I share a screenshot?

To share a screenshot that you just took and haven't saved yet:

  1. Click on the Page actions menu in the address bar and select Share.
  2. Select the application that you want to share the screenshot to.

To share a screenshot that you've already saved:

  1. Click the Library icon 57 library icon .
  2. Click Screenshots.
  3. Hover over the screenshot you want to share until the button appears.
  4. Click the share button.

How do I delete screenshots saved to My Shots?

To delete individual shots, click the Trash icon and click the Delete button. This icon can be found on each shot page and by hovering on each shot thumbnail on the My Shots page.

How do I disable Screenshots?

Advanced users only.

To disable Firefox Screenshots:

  1. In the address bar, type about:config and press EnterReturn.

    • The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I accept the risk! to continue to the about:config page.
  2. Type screenshots in the Search field.
    The You extensions.screenshots.disabled preference displays.
  3. Double-click this preference to set it to true.

Once you have toggled this preference, you are all set. Screenshots will no longer run in your browser.

How do I retain screenshots if I move to another computer?

If you install Firefox on another computer, you will need to copy the complete Firefox profile if you wish to retain access to any saved screenshots. You can read more about how to do this here.

What happens when a shot expires?

By default, screenshots saved online will expire in two weeks. After they expire, the page to view the shot will no longer display the image but will show the domain where the shot was taken. If you visit your shot within two weeks of its expiration, you'll see an option to restore the image. After two weeks the image will be permanently deleted.

Why doesn't Firefox Screenshots work on certain pages?

Screenshots should work on almost all web pages. Certain pages that contain the HTML <frameset> are not fully supported and may not be shootable.

Additionally, some pages with special permissions to modify Firefox, like Test Pilot and, are unsupported due to strict security rules designed to prevent page manipulation.

Lastly, certain browser pages like the Firefox home and OptionsPreferences pages are not supported. These pages are built using a different language than the rest of the Web.

I can't save screenshots to the cloud

If you're having trouble saving screenshots, check to see if the server is down. If it is or if your system is down, you can still take, copy, and download screenshots but you can't save them to the cloud.

I'm always on Private Browsing (or never remember history) or ESR. Will Firefox Screenshots work?

While you can capture screenshots using the following settings, you cannot upload them.

  • When Private Browsing
  • When Firefox is set to Never remember history.
  • Extended Support Release (ESR)
  • When Firefox Screenshots is disabled using the about:config instructions.

When privately browsing, downloaded screenshots will show up in your Downloads manager upon clicking the Library icon 57 library icon .

What data does Firefox Screenshots collect?

Firefox Screenshots collects event data in a manner consistent with the Firefox Browser Privacy Notice. We collect this data to learn how people use Screenshots so that we can make it better for everyone. You can view all of the events that we capture in this document.

Can I opt out of data collection?

Definitely. Screenshots consists of a web-based component and a browser-based component. Firefox’s OptionsPreferences are undergoing a remodel, so disabling metrics works slightly differently depending on which version of Firefox you’re using.

Disabling add-on data collection

If you are on Firefox 55:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu Fx57Menu and choose Options.Preferences.
  2. Click the Advanced panel and click the Data Choices tab.
  3. Click the Enable Firefox Health Report toggle to turn it off.

If you are on Firefox 56 or above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu Fx57Menu and choose Options.Preferences.
  2. Click the Privacy & Security panel.
  3. Go to the Firefox Data Collection and Use section.
  4. Click the Allow Firefox to automatically send technical and interaction data to Mozilla checkbox.

Disabling website data collection

Screenshots respects your browser’s Do Not Track setting to determine whether or not to collect website data. This applies to Firefox as well as other browsers that support Do Not Track.

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu Fx57Menu and choose Options.Preferences.
  2. Select the Privacy panel.
  3. Click the Manage your Do Not Track settings link.
  4. Select the Always apply Do Not Track checkbox and click OK.

  3. Set the Send websites a "Do Not Track” signal that you don’t want to be tracked toggle to Always.
