Why do deleted emails remain in my All Mail box?

I put emails from my Inbox into the delete box. After a while I delete these but I have just found that they remail in the All Mail Box. How do I delete these emails from my acccount on Thunderbird? They do appear in my online Gmail account as far as I can see.

The folder is called ALLmail, and it keeps all mail, including what you deleted. My suggestion is to unsubscribe from allmail, as it doubles transfer time, doubles disk space, and increases PC resource usage.

Thank you. I will give that a go and see if it works. I don't want to lose anything other than my deleted items. I know there is a choice between ALL MAIL and ARCHIVE. Would ARCHIVE be better or end up storing too much too?
