Firefox browser just started diverting me to full-tab advertizing websites. Popups are blocked. How can I fix this?

Just in the last week, possibly since a software update, when I click on a link I am diverted to a new website that I did not want to see. The link I clicked also opens, but I have to close the unwanted tab and navigate back to the one I wanted. How can I stop this from happening?

The question did not have any troubleshooting data attached so it's hard to guess, but try restarting with Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox and see if that's caused by e.g. a rogue addon or something similar.
