Videos won't play since Firefox update to latest version

more options

Hi, I have already read some topics on this matter, and here's what I have done :

  • Cleared cookies
  • Cleared Firefox cache
  • Disabled µBlock Origin

My videos were playing fine, but since the Firefox update to 86.0, no videos are playing at all. This is valid for all sites : Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, etc. NO VIDEOS AT ALL !

Thanks in advance for your help.

I should add that all videos play perfectly in my other browser which is Chrome. This is a Firefox-specific issue.

Also, on Safe Mode everything works.

Let me insist that this has happened since the last Firefox update : 30 seconds before the update all videos were playing fine, and 30 seconds after the update no videos at all were playing. Literally.

Also, I haven't installed or modified any extension in the process. This must have been caused by the update.

Hello, Are you talking about youtube videos? Please check that hardware acceleration is checked or not. Uncheck the hardware acceleration and then try again.

No, like said in the OP I'm talking about ALL videos from ALL sites, not just YouTube. Also, HW accel is off and has always been off. Shall I say this again ? This must have been caused by Firefox update, not by anything else !

Is this about Firefox Safe Mode where it works ?

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing the problem by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via one of these:

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit

You can check the Web Console for media related messages.

So, I disabled ALL my extensions one by one, then I restarted Firefox. Videos played normally. Then I reenabled ALL my extensions, and I restarted Firefox. Videos STILL played normally. Problem solved, right ?

Well, yes, but this proves that indeed it wasn't the extensions themselves that were the problem.

Once again, everything was working 30 seconds before the Firefox update. 30 seconds after the update, videos weren't working anymore, on any site. Something happened DURING the update, and to solve it I had to disable all the extensions, restart Firefox, reenable them all and restart Firefox. Isn't this weird ?

Did you reboot the computer in the meantime as that is usually advised as a common troubleshooting step in case of weird issues ?

No reboot at all, same session, same everything. Just a couple of Firefox restarts, nothing more.
