I heard that the UAE bought 51% of Mozilla, is that correct? If so, are the programs currently under their control "SAFE" from being tampered with or changed in a way that a user, who has donated, could have his or her data reviewed and or copied without their knowledge or consent? Thx for a reply. Greg

I should ditch FIREFOX and all that tied in with the latest NAG screens I've been seeing calling for support of Mozilla when opening my Thunderbird email

First of all, this is entirely up to you. If someone you trust tells you you should ditch Firefox, because it is funded from the UAE, just do it. Whether you do yourself a favor by doing that, and whether this is justified in the first place is an entirely different story.

Wrt Thunderbird, again: Thunderbird is not a Mozilla product. It is developed and maintained by volunteers in their free time. None of them is a Mozilla employee. The same goes for people answering questions in this support forum. They are volunteers dedicating their time to help other users. There are by no means Mozilla employees providing support for Thunderbird.

Should you decide to donate for Thunderbird, you'll help keeping the project afloat. You wouldn't give money to Mozilla.

... my Thunderbird email, which also doesn't allow for encryption and I should use GPG Suite to do that as an add on.

There are multiple ways to encrypt messages using Thunderbird, it depends on what you want to do. Stating Thunderbird doesn't allow for encryption is FUD. If you do have any specific question about setting up encryption in Thunderbird you're welcome to start a new topic.

I'm not funding terrorism through supporting an organization that was reported to be taking funds from the UAE! Look at this article I found.

You're really making bold claims. In any case, nowhere in that article is stated anything supporting your claims. Beyond that, the 3 letter agencies in the US are spying on their citizens as well. This isn't specific to the UAE.

Is Mozilla listening???????? I'm waiting.

This forum isn't Mozilla, and you won't get any sort of official response here. Feel free to contact Mozilla directly.

This will be my last post in this topic.

Thunderbird is a community project, and not a Mozilla product. I'm not going to comment on that wild rumor you 'heard'.

Hi Greg, that's crazy. Where did you hear that?

Mozilla Foundation is a California public benefit corporation. California has strict laws on control of not-for-profit companies, so it is not possible for governments or shareholders to buy control of Mozilla. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure the Board would never consider that.

All, I've been in the electronics and IT field since 1979. I've supported Mozilla, Openoffice etc. because I got tired of sending money to Bill Gates to be his bitch to use software that wasn't proofed before release and took all the credit while we waited on the 800 line to find out why the system keeps hanging up. So I went to MAC. I liked Jobs when I could have bought stock, but I had other issues. Now, a learned person who speaks 5 languages, has an SCI clearance and has worked for all the 3 letter agencies except NSA, and tells me Mozilla had received over 50% of their funding from UAE and that I should ditch FIREFOX and all that tied in with the latest NAG screens I've been seeing calling for support of Mozilla when opening my Thunderbird email, which also doesn't allow for encryption and I should use GPG Suite to do that as an add on. I'm just trying to know I'm not funding terrorism through supporting an organization that was reported to be taking funds from the UAE! Look at this article I found........ https://theintercept.com/2016/10/24/darkmatter-united-arab-emirates-spies-for-hire/ .... It's stuff like this that makes me want to stay with online email and screw encryption, I'm not a terrorist and not sending out orders, I just want to know I'm backing a group that actually is a great org and wants support! I'm still waiting for someone from Mozilla to refute the 50-51% or whatever.

I appreciate the response, but I'm no anarchist, I don't subscribe to rumor mongers and I use SNOPES to that effect. But when this person says something, I listen. Is Mozilla listening???????? I'm waiting.

Thanks again! Semper Fi! G

Thank you for your reply on a point by point note. I haven't been active in many things IT related since 9-11 and I've not followed changes/advances/declines since then in the computer software arena. I appreciate the education and wise words.

I consider myself up to point, I do like open source software and always have supported groups that want to make software "enjoyable while useful". I've supported Wikipedia, my.ref.desk, Internet Archive and other ORGS like them. Thanks to all. Greg
