Firefox just did an update and I've had problems with Adobe Flash Player ever since. I would appreciate any help

When I sign in to Firefox I get a message stating "Adobe Flash Player' or 'Shockwave Flash' have stopped working. I didn't have this problem prior to the latest update (Firefox Version 49.0) and I don't have this problem using other browsers

Hi Debbie, Can you try to get a screenshot of the message please it may help us understand what is happening.

The problem will be different or not exist with other browsers because they do not use the same FlashPlayer plugin. What happens if you visit this test page with FIREFOX

Does that work or give you some sort of error message ? Please also see

I've taken a screenshot and when I try to post it I get the message that the file is too large. How do I make the file smaller?

Sorry the screenshot did not seem to come through. Please try to convert the file to a .png or .jpg or just take a screenshot again with the Windows Snippng tool and make sure it uses .png which will be the default I think.

This article may help if you have problems with the snipping tool

The other method of creating a screenshot as XP users would need is to paste the screenshot in to the program called paint and then choose the .jpeg or .png format when saving it.

Some of the other forums here deal with big images and compress them but apparently this one does not. It will be a known bug, but as we change forum software soon bugs are not being fixed at the moment.

Did you manage to try the Adobe teat page ? What did that show ? or is that what you are trying to post a screenshot of

I tried the Adobe teat page. It looks like Adobe is updated. I have version NPAPI 23.0.0162. I'm trying to send you a screenshot of the error message I'm getting about Adobe crashing. I've sent another screenshot

Thats a message from Windows. I confirm we have the screenshots now, you should be able to see them yourself. The thumbnails expand when clicked. I can see someone else is trying to post with advice and will wait for that and your reply about the test page.

When you go to the Control Panel,   in the upper right corner, you'll see:   'Categorie'.
Click on that, and make a choice.
Next,   you should see   'Flash',   just click on it and then you'll be able to check updates.

Happy112...thank you but I've clicked on 'Categorie. I see where Adobe Flash Player was updated on 9/13/16. I don't see any 'Flash' option

I see where Firefox was updated on 9/24/16. I didn't have any problem with Adobe Flash Player until after Firefox updated.

In light of the message from Microsoft Windows Vista it is probably worth uninstalling and reinstalling Flash Player from the Windows control panel, IF' it fails again once it has been updated.

I can not tell if yours is updated yet. the forum software picks it up as being

Shockwave Flash 23.0 r0 

The last part is not reported and that is the part that shows if it is fully updated.

The adobe test site will show that and at the same time offer updates where applicable, and runs a rudimentary test and displays flashplayer content proving or otherwise that Flashplayer has some functionality.

Sorry you are posting faster than I am keeping up. So you have FlashPlayer working part of the time and working on the Adobe test page.

It is unusual that it is failing with a Microsoft error. I am not sure how the FlashPlayer update process works but it probably updates rather than reinstalls so there is no harm in trying removing and renstalling FlashPLayer from Windows Vista. I have hardly ever used Vista but it will have an uninstall option in the Vista control panel.

I am not sure of the names used. Firefox's add-ons manager page shows it a Shockwave Flash. My Windows 10 Control Panel -> Programs & Features shows it as Adobe Flash Player NPAPI 23

If reinstalling it does not work then try turning Firefox in its safe mode. Hold the shift key when Clicking on the start icon, or use the menu option to restart with addons disabled if Firefox is already running.

If flashplayer works like that then try in this order

  1. Updating the graphics driver
  2. Turning off hardware acceleration (Note safe mode does that but only temporarily)

I am sure Happy112 will explain that for you, if she has not already done so whilst I was typing this. I will probably be busy elswhere most of today, but will check back here tomorrow if it is still unsolved.

It is updated.
You can check that:   3-bar menu > Add-ons > Shockwave Flash > click the 'more'-button and you'll see.

Are you looking at what it says you have installed ? Not what it says may be available?

A screenshot of the test page should clarify this.

Your System details picked up by forum software show only one Flash Player version. Some people end up with multiple versions, the forum software normally is able to pick that up. Having multiple versions can cause issues.

The latest version as Happy112 said has 162 or 162.dll at the end of it. You will see that from the add-ons manager if you go to the shockwave flash entry and click the more option.


As an aside note Adobe Flash Player will likely install additional freeware junk unless you opt out. At least it is better than some other sites, at least it gives a clear indication it is doing this and an easy tick box option to opt out.

Summary:

In Firefox:   3-bar menu > Add-ons > plug-ins > Shockwave Flash > does it say:   23.0.r0    ?   It's updated.   To make sure, click on the   'more'-button.

In your   OS   (Windows):
You can check by going to the control panel   (click on   'categories'  in the upper right corner,   then click on   'Flash').
The fastest way:   click on the magnifying glass icon on the task bar and type either   'Flash'  or   'Adobe Flash',   it'll say:   'Flash Player'.
Click on it and it will take you to a context menu, where you can click on:   'Updates'.
Does it say:   23.0.0.162   ?
It's updated.
