When opening a new message, sometimes the new message disappears and the next message is opened. It does NOT send it to the 'trash' bin. It is gone. Why?

When double clicking a new message to open, the new message disappears and the next message opens. The new message is gone... cannot be found in 'trash' nor any other folder. This does not happen consistently. Thanks for any suggestions.
