Firefox Referrals lets you invite friends and family to try Firefox using your own personal referral link. This new feature, starting in Firefox version 155, is currently limited to users in the United States. This article explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect your privacy.

How do I invite someone to try Firefox?

You can use the Share Firefox option on the Firefox Settings Account and sync page or you can select the Share Firefox option in the Firefox menu panel. This will open a Share window (shown above).

What information do we collect?

If you choose to use Firefox Referrals, Firefox creates a random referral code for your browser.

When someone installs Firefox after using your referral link, we record that the installation came from your referral code.

This allows us to tell you how many people have successfully installed Firefox from links you've shared.

What information don't we collect?

Firefox Referrals is designed to count successful referrals, not identify the people who install Firefox using your link.

We do not tell you:

• Who installed Firefox
• Their name or email address
• Their IP address or location
• Which websites they visited
• How they use Firefox after installing it

If someone installs Firefox using your referral link, you'll simply see your referral count increase.

Why do we collect this information?

We use this information for three reasons:

• To show you how many people you've successfully introduced to Firefox.
• To understand whether Firefox Referrals is helping more people discover Firefox.
• To improve the referral experience over time.

Is my referral code personal information?

Your referral code is a randomly generated identifier. It does not contain your name, email address, Mozilla account information or anything else that directly identifies you.

Can Mozilla see who referred whom?

The referral system is designed so that we count successful referrals without creating a list of personal relationships between Firefox users.

The referral code is only used to count successful installs associated with a referral link. Mozilla does not use it to understand who your friends or family are.

Will every referral be counted?

Not always.

Some referrals cannot be attributed because of privacy settings or technical limitations. For example:

• If someone disables Firefox telemetry during setup.
• If attribution isn't supported on their platform.
• If browser or device settings prevent attribution.
• If the user already has Firefox on their device.

Because of this, the number shown in Firefox may be lower than the total number of people you've actually convinced to try Firefox.

Referrals can also take up to 24 hours to be reflected in your count, so if a friend has just installed Firefox using your link, don't worry if it doesn't show up right away.

Can I opt out?

Yes.

Participation in Firefox Referrals is optional.

If you choose not to participate, simply don't share your referral link.

You can also disable Firefox telemetry at any time. Because referral counting relies on Firefox's existing attribution systems, referrals will no longer be counted once telemetry is disabled.

Does Mozilla sell or share this information?

No.

Referral information is used only to operate and improve the Firefox Referrals program, consistent with Mozilla's privacy principles.
