Firefox keeps creating duplicate bookmarks, and recovering bookmarks I deleted months ago.

As an experiment, out of frustration, I deleted all of my bookmarks - approximate 4,200 of them. This morning, almost 1500 have returned.

How can this be fixed?

I've used the Firefox Bookmark Dupes several times & 100+ bookmarks keep returning, both in the drop down 'bookmarks' menu & in folders, usually in folders that have had recent activity. Hours have been spent trying to fix this. Also tried using 'show all 'bookmarks' and deleting individual bookmarks that way to no avail!
