For the last few updates, Firefox has caused the same issues on all four of our Macs (Pac Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro & Mac Mini). All of them are currently on the latest OS X (El Capitan 10.11.3). The update appears to install and work, but a second icon appears in the dock. On trying to quit Firefox, it won't quit and then (even worse) the Mac will not close down. 'Shutdown' and 'Restart' do nothing. Force quit shows both versions of Firefox, but neither can be 'force quitted'. The only way to shut down the Mac is to switch it off at the wall. On re-starting the Mac, Apple informs that it was not closed down properly. However, after all this, Firefox then does work properly. I think it is installed correctly in the Applications folder, and I have (on one Mac) completely refreshed Firefox. but this hasn't helped. Is this a known bug, or am I doing something wrong on all four Macs? Thanks, in advance, for your help.

I have read replies to problems similar to mine, but I don't understand most of the things to try. At this point I have 3 Firefox icons on my dock, none of which will launch the browser. I have been to Applications and tried to uninstall by dragging Firefox to trash and get a message that you can't drag it to trash while open.

Can't quit and therefore can't install. I wanted to reinstall Firefox.

Hi,

I am using Firefox on my Macbook Pro.

When I quit Firefox, the windows close but the programme remains open on my dock with the dot underneath, as if it's still open.

Force quit doesn't work, and it is not showing up in activity monitor, so there is nothing to force kill there.

I then can't restart Firefox without restarting my computer.

Firefox Freezes, disallows Quit or Force Quit, disallows Mac Shutdown

Hi, Thanks for allowing me to join the Mozilla Support Forum. Reference is made to archived messages contained in, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1024266

Problem started about 2 weeks ago, unknown what event may have triggered it. -- Firefox 39.0.3 seemed to randomly freeze, upon commanding Firefox to Quit, at which point quit and force quit fails to happen. -- My mac is a Mac Pro 6 core, 16 GB (Late 2013) -- Firefox Privacy is set to "Remember History." -- When condition occurs, Mac requires power off cold shutdown -- All of the various ways to invoke Mac Force Quit fail, (even the command line command fails.) -- Attempts to fix .....

      -- Reset VRAM, PRAM
-- Performed all diagnostic functions available in Onyx
-- Rebooted to another drive to perform diagnostics in Apple Disk Utility
-- Restarted Firefox in the Firefox-Safe-Mode --- problem persists
-- Reinstalled Firefox (and downgraded it from the newest Beta ver.)

The "freeze and disallow quit/force quit" condition is intermittant, but I can always trigger it if I do this:

1. Launch Firefox 2. Launch Parallels 3. Launch Windows 7 X4 within Parallels 4. Attempt to quit Firefox --- the condition occurs.

I can also trigger the condition if I 1. Launch Firefox 2. Launch Parallels with Windows 7 X4 3. Quit Windows 7 X4 and quit Parallels 4. Attempt to quit Firefox ---- the condition occurs

The condition does not occur if I do the above with TorBrowser

If I don't launch Firefox then launch and use Parallels with Windows 7 X4 then quit Windows 7 X4 and quit Parallels Then, launch Firefox, then Firefox behaves normally.

I realize that this may not be just parallels running in tandem with Firefox, there may be other conditions unrelated to Parallels, that randomly trigger this. I'm picking on Parallels, as the condition is always triggered in this case.

My interim solution is to avoid launching Firefox at any time that Parallels & Windows 7 X4 are active and to use TorBrowser during this time, if needed.

Many thanks, in advance, and I hope i've provided enough information that a better course of action can be brought to light.

On Mac OS 10.11.14 El Capitan.

Firefox doesn't shut down when closed.

The dock icon persists, in the force quit window the application is present.

However you cannot force quit - it does nothing.

When you try and reopen the application it states the application is open.

If you attempt to restart your computer at this point it won't let you. And now you have requested a restart you can no longer open any other applications to resolve the issue. This leaves you with one option. A forced shutdown by holding down the power key.

All in all. Pretty bad.

However some bright spark has deduced that you can do the following (provided you hadn't already tried to restart)

Open the terminal window and perform the following commands.

sudo killall launchservicesd sudo killall Dock

Ongoing issue since the v.40+ upgrades to my Firefox - downloads and installs fine, reopens - and I have two icons in my Dock (El Capitan - 10.11.3 (15D21)

Try to Quit either - nothing. Try to Force Quit - nothing. Try to shut down my computer - nothing. Requires a hard boot to my Mac to clear the two Icons to just one and then everything seems fine.

I still like browser (even if that seems contra to a lot of posts out there), but not happy I have to be abusive to my Mac to complete an install of Firefox. Thoughts?

I have Firefox 43.0.4 running with Mac OS 10.11 and I often find that Firefox refuses to quit no matter what method I try (force quit, command + Q etc.). Ultimately this prevents me from shutting down my machine properly and I have to resort to using the power button.

None of the suggested actions have so far worked (i.e. refresh, reinstall, etc.).

Whenever Firefox updates on my Mac, Firefox won't shut down, and (as a result) I can't shut down my Mac. A 'Force Quit" doesn't do anything. My only option is to hold the power button down on my Mac for 10 seconds to 'force' a hard shutdown.

After reboot, Firefox works normally (closing Firefox works correctly).

Hi All,

Firefox continues to crash when I close a tab, despite running updates and a refresh. I'm running 45.0.1. on El Capitan 10.11.3. This problem has occurred mainly in the last week. It also won't respond to Force Quit or Restart/Shut Down after it's crashed, and I have to switch the Mac off at the power button to get it to restart (a 'ghost' version turns up in the dock, and neither version responds to Force Quit). Here's my crash report:

If I try to restart mac I have to force quit firefox to complete the restart. I have uninstalled Firefox several times and deleted the default profile in the library. Prior to the new update (a few days ago), it worked perfectly.

I'm using Mac since… 1984 and I use it for a lot of tasks, really a lot. So I've between 12 and 18 applications open at the same time, one of them is Firefox. On shutdown (which takes several minutes) I leave… to discover later on that Firefox disables the shutdown because "some windows are still open"! WHAT THE HECK?!?! I don't care if windows are open, if I ASK to shutdown, I want it to shut down, not to care about windows being open or not. The worse is that a) Firefox is the last (or one of the last) applications Mac OS X shuts down. b) I can't teach / instruct or choose Firefox to stop even if windows are open. Or am I mistaken?
