Why does deleting one day in the history cache delete everything? Isn't there a way to only delete certain things while leaving everything else intact?

I have to clear all that away before i use the browser. Every time i change STARTUP "homepage" when i close browser and open it again everything comes back, nothing changes. What is wrong with firefox?
