There is a search bar in the middle of my screen (Firefox/DuckDuckGo) It does not work. If I type in it, the cursor moves to address bar. This is very annoying as I am looking at the search bar and watching what I type. Then the search bar fades out so I can't even try to type in it anymore. From what I have read on the forum, Firefox has disabled the "fix" for this problem. So essentially they have made the visible search bar useless and have fixed it so that those of us who prefer to use it are completely out of luck. What does Firefox get out of this? I'm feeling really manipulated and will probably just switch back to Chrome. From reading other questions, I get the feeling they are planning an ever better search bar (can't image what that could mean, all I want to do is search). But why destroy the old one before the new one is ready?

I have done every step I can find to change this setting, nothing works, why did this change all of a sudden and how do I fix it, this is ridiculous, why would you change my settings without asking me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need to fix my issue with search, not sure if it is because of VPN or smth. I use Browsec as VPN, just recognized Firefox has its own VPN. Did anyone had same issue? I saw there was an update on July 1, 2026, Until yesterday everything worked fine.

I've been using 2 search bars for quite some time.

I use the top bar for URLs and the bar mid screen for ad-hoc searches.

(I know I can use the top bar for both but I'm long since retired, quite set in my ways and would rather not have to change unless absolutely necessary😉)

I was able to restore the mid screen search bar functionality using an about:config setting from memory when I first noticed the search bar consolidation a few years back.

It's been working fine until the latest update.

Latest update lets me activate the mid screen bar with a mouse click but any attempt to then enter anything causes focus to move to the top bar so text input on the mid screen bar is no longer possible.

I've tested this on 2 Win 11 desktops and 1 Win 10 desktop and see the same 'issue' arising after the update.

Has that functionality been removed entirely with the latest update or is there an about:config setting that can restore it?

perhaps if you just had a few empty boxes so someone could write in the name of the search engine and firefox would know the complex URL's connected to the name of the search engine.............

I downloaded Foxfire esr version to get rid of goggle. I transferred my data from google. Now the Google search is showing up. Should I uninstall goggle to get rid of it?

I set my search engine as DuckDuckgo for privacy some time ago. I deleted Bing and others from the list of browsers as well. I made some effort to set up Firefox and my computer in general as privately oriented as possible without breaking things. I come on Firefox today and see Google has been set as me default search engine again, the other search engines are back in my list and Duckduckgo sitting on the back bench. I seem to be in the battle with Windows as well. I shut off unnecessary data transfer like customer satisfaction BS and they return like a bad rash. I am no tech whiz but I put a lot of work into my privacy only to have it reversed. What do I do?

I tried to use Firefox as my search engine but that didn't work so I re-downloaded DuckDuck, but the address bar say "search with google". In new version i can switch between search engines, but it makes me to many clicks. In old version, i just clicked icons in bottom and it become search in this engine. How to bak to the old version?

Since I got my first computer in the 1980s the centered search bar has been the window for searching. It sits at a comfortable height for my eyes and is not surrounded by visual clutter. Since the address bar first appeared as an alternative for searching I have consistently disabled or overridden it. It is bad visual design; it is visually inconvenient, and to many of us who have used consumers for decades, it is not how a computer screen should look.

Now comes the newest version, which locks users into one way of doing things. Well, Newsflash: A lot of us want the freedom to use an operating system that responds to us, not vice-versa.

I think you are not making a lot of friends with this version. Rather than trying to spin it as something great, which it isn't, why not admit it's a problem, and rewrite it to make it more useful to everyone?
