Ok, thanks, finally human help! I just had to change my pc and make a fresh install of the operating system. I used Linux mint on the last pc, and have Linux MX 18.3 on the new one, currently in use. I took the precaution of copying my Firefox and Thunderbird folders from the old hard drive, as I have several years worth of bookmarks organised in to folders, irreplaceable. This was the way I had preserved that information in previous changes, and swapping the old folders with those in a new install worked fine. But now i find the new version has changed and the files differ and cannot therefore be swapped. I don't really want to get into blaming or how disappointed and annoyed I am, as this won't be the fault of the person helping, and that is appreciated. But back ups need to be backwards compatible or there is no point? So, not sure which version I had, but will have been a couple of years old with updates. In my 'etc' folder there was a Firefox folder, and in that I have a folder marked pref. In that folder there is a file named apturl.js and I have saved those folders. With my new install there is not even a folder for 'firefox' in my 'etc' folder. How do I proceed to restore my bookmarks? If I need to install and older Firefox version I will do so. Many thanks, Tony

Upgrade from V52.esr to V81 - no Logins imported, no Fix working

I'm trying to upgrade from V52 ESR - kept for known and obvious reasons concerning addons compatibility - to a current V81. Copied the profile data from user/appdata/mozilla/firefox.../myprofile/*.* - including "key3.db" (in use), "key4.db" (don't know where this one originates from - shouldn't exist at all for versions < 57 or so) and "logins.json".

So far stumbled upon:

  • No Logins in new system visible. No master password set. After setting a new master password, still no logins visible.
  • This very forum here suggests - in many threads for version upgrades from somewhere in the 50s to up to the 70s - to simply copy the "key3.db" and "logins.json" and to delete the "key4.db" on the new system's profile. That does not change anything at all.

Am i forced to keep the V52, now not only by means of addons compatibility, but also by means of login manager compatibility?

What would the correct path to upgrade be? Would i have to install each and every in-between-version from 52 to 81 to be able to migrate? Will i run into the exact same trouble doing it that way, only burning daytime for nothing? Or is it guarantied to somehow get the logins data transfered to the current version? How did all the Millions of other users fare with that aspect? Is that an extremely rare case where users set a master password, so that developers decided to not care anymore about those nasty paranoids?

Just a suggestion on getting update content information.

I do not enable automatic updates in order to maintain personal update control and to generally wait a few days to allow any bugs in the update to shake out [e.g 81.0.2 to fix the Twitter bug in 81.0.1 -- No biggie, small bugs can crop-up in any update in spite of Mozilla's commendable quality control]. When manually checking Firefox "About" to look at update status, the pop-up shows the current installed version, with a link to "What's new?" [Great idea, thanks]. Unfortunately, there is not a "What's new?" link beside the box to download a new update, thus one must do an on-line search for the related Release Note to determine the urgency/relevancy of doing the update.

Adding an additional "What's new?" would be an appreciated change -- Thanks and be well.

Hello, I just restarted my PC after a Windows 10 update (Windows Update). Launching Firefox from the task bar no longer worked (link removed). So I launched Firefox from the start menu. A completely blank version of Firefox appeared on the screen, as if I had just installed it. No more favorites, no more extensions, no more customization. All Firefox installation files in the AppData directory are dated today. How can a Windows update remove a Firefox installation? Is it possible to recover favorites and bookmarks? Thank you for your answers. Regards,

A few days ago my electronic certificates have disappeared from the firefox container The certificate provider has vetoed me from delivering a new certificate, because it is the second time Firefox has lost a certificate in 2020. The certificates I need for any management before the administration of Spain and more now with the COVID After it is granted, you have to verify your identity with the Tax Agency, and they have already called my attention for renewing the same year a certificate that firefox loses when it is updated. I'm very, very pissed off I will have to switch to Chrome

My present iMac is failing rapidly and I will be replacing it with a new Mac very. I do not have a Time Machine backup. The only info I really need is how to copy off, to an external drive, all the bookmarks and bookmark structure), extensions, and add-ons I have added to Firefox, and then add them to Firefox on my future Mac.

Do I just copy the Firefox app to the external drive? I looked in the Macs' base system Library and Preferences, and in my User files, but I do not see anything related to Firefox.

My old (current) and failing Mac is running the latest version of Catalina,

Thanks for any info!

Unable to import saved firefox profile (from windows 7 32-bit, to windows 10 64-bit) - new profile has none of my data

My attempt at transferring profile from an existing machine to a new machine has not produced the intended result, and I need help.

I saved my firefox profile (on a 32-bit windows 7 machine; firefox was fully up to date) without firefox running, in a ZIP file (the letter number combination followed by dot followed by default), then copied the ZIP file to the new machine (windows 10 64-bit), unzipped it (so I had the same file name as from the old machine), then copied this folder into position at

C:\users\user\appdata\roaming\mozilla\firefox\profiles

I then started firefox on the new machine, went to about:profiles, created new profile, selected the folder (which was present at this step), then completed the procedure and started a new firefox with the new profile (the option given in about:profiles).

The new instance of firefox has none of my data (several thousand bookmarks, passwords, etc.); instead looks like the other (default new) profile.

The existing profile file set was (after this procedure) visible in

C:\users\user\appdata\local\mozilla\firefox\profiles

The restored profile is running now as "Default User" and reflects the folder I transferred from the old machine (except that I changed the word "default" in that folder to "main", leaving the number-letter part and the dot unchanged.)

No errors were indicated from firefox (which is running version 83 now) during any steps of the old back-up/archive save step or the new restore/recover step.

What am I doing wrong? How can I recover my existing profile data? The procedure, while not very friendly, seems straightforward enough. I don't want to go into the details of recovering specific database files/folders; I'd just like the profile I had before functioning in the new machine.

Please help

How do I stop using beta?

I Googled about stopping using Firefox beta and transition to release version but none of the pages I found in this forum talks about an error message about user profile that only gives me the option to Create a New Profile (therefore losing all my add-ons, cookies, settings and everything) or Exit.

I tried manually googling "download Firefox" and downloaded the release version and after installing it, I get the warning message above. This thread here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1224888 has a link to the rapid release version but I end up in the same warning message.

Since the beta will necessarily always be a newer version than a release version, how do I transition from beta to a release version but preserve all my settings, add-ons and everything if Firefox will tell me that it won't let me use my existing profile in an older version, the release version?

My motivation to leave the beta version is that Firefox started having a bug since 27-Oct-2020 in Google meetings where either a shared screen or the camera image of the person in a meeting appears very zoomed in in the top left corner so it doesn't show the rest of the image.

So earlier I downloaded Firefox for my Macbook Air and made the change from Chrome to Firefox. I followed all the instructions online of transferring data from Chrome to Firefox and all seemed great. I just restarted my computer because I was having issues with my internet, and went to reopen everything again. Firefox isn't saved like a normal application like it should, it's still acting like I'm installing it from the .dmg each time. Also, it hasn't saved any of the transferred data/settings I did earlier today. I have no idea what's going on?

I have a customers dead laptop, she wants her firefox profile copied to her new laptop.

Since the laptop is dead, I can't use sync. I have her profile data, which is useless in her new laptop.

For future reference, how am I supposed to do this? I've always kept as many customers as I can on firefox.

Is there a conversion tool? A way around this? Or am I just going to have to say shes out of luck?

A few days ago Firefox automatically updated and destroyed all my logins and passwords and a huge amount beside. Yes, there was blurb about how to find them which involved a file which did not exist on my system and the whole was not comprehensible.

I did ask for help but got nothing

Somehow, the next day my system had gone back to the earlier setup. Now Firefox wants me to update AGAIN!

Given my experience how can I trust Firefox not to destroy my data?
