Why won't Firefox let me access Google when it is in the tool bar anyway?

I set the browser to open at Google and at first, I had no problem, but now Firefox is blocking me accessing the site, saying it is unsafe and will cause harm to my computer. I have used this site for years and had no problem, so why is this happening, please. Chris Keys

Hi jscher and cor-el - the problem with Firefox has now been solved. My son who looks after the schools computers visited yesterday and said that BrowserSafe was something that had probably attached itself to something I had downloaded. He has uninstalled it and now everything works perfectly.

I checked again with the shop this morning and they said I had been misinformed last time I rang them and that they don't install BrowserSafe, only Bullguard, so if I had been told that in the first place, we might have got there sooner. Nevertheless, all is well now and thank you very much for your assistance. It was very comprehensive and you were both very patient. Kind regards Chris

Hi Chris, based on what you've described, I can't think of any good reason for a FiddlerRoot certificate to show up in place of a Google certificate.

Returning to cache for a moment, normally you would have files a non-zero amount of cache content after a few minutes of browsing. Make sure you are checking the "Cached Web Content" section and not the "Offline Web Content" section of the dialog.

Hi again - I checked the cache content again and it had 8.2% which I have cleared. I think I may have inadvertently cleared whatever the content was before when I said it was 0%, without looking before I cleared. That doesn't seem to have made a difference though. I restarted the pc and am now running scans, so will report back tomorrow, when I have results. Thanks for your time. Chris.

more options

Hi again jscher 2000 - I did a complete scan of the computer last night and there was only one small problem which was automatically fixed by Bullguard. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox and the result is the same. What I have noticed today, though, is that IE uses www.google.co.uk and Firefox uses www.google.com. Could this be the problem? If so, how do I change the web address to the co.uk one?

Sorry to have such a tricky problem.

Kind regards Chris

Hi Chris, I thought Google would redirect you automatically if you are in the U.K. but perhaps that isn't true any more...

If you prefer to use a google.co.uk search plugin -- making this your active search engine on the search bar will apply to the address bar as well -- you can get one from this page:

http://mycroftproject.com/google-search-plugins.html

If you use Ctrl+f to find each one that mentions UK you will discover numerous options.

Hi - you're probably right. I did try one of the UK options but it made no difference. Guess I'm stuck with it how it is for the moment. When I get a chance I will take my pc back to where I purchased it and see if they can figure it out, though they say they have never heard of this happening before, when I have spoken on the phone to them. If and when I do get it fixed I will come back and let you know how they did it.

Once again, thanks for all your input. Much appreciated.

Kind regards Chris

Did you try to clear the Google cookies?

If clearing cookies doesn't work then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies is corrupted.

Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

more options

Hi cor-el - I have just followed your advice and cleared all cookies but, having said that, I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox several times to see if that clears the problem. Unfortunately, all is still as it was, though, so I am seeking the assistance of the shop I bought the computer from. I will probably have to take in the computer for them to look at so, when I have done that, I will report back to here.

Thanks for your assistance. Kind regards Chris

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

I assume you meant a screenshot of the page I get when search on Google via Firefox, so I have attached that. Chris

What is under the "Technical Details" and who is the issuer of the certificate?

Check out why the site is untrusted (click "Technical Details to expand that section) and if this is caused by a missing intermediate certificate then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source.

You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.

  • Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"

Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".

  • Click the "View..." button and inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer of the certificate.

You can see more Details like intermediate certificates that are used in the Details pane.

If "I Understand the Risks" is missing then this page may be opened in an (i)frame and in that case try the right-click context menu and use "This Frame: Open Frame in New Tab".

Note that some firewalls monitor secure (https) connections and send their own certificate instead of the website's certificate.

Hi cor-el - this is what is there - nothing about an intermediate certificate. Is that any help.

"Technical Details

www.google.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided. (Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)"

Under "I Understand the Risks" is as follows:

"If you understand what's going on, you can tell Firefox to start trusting this site's identification. Even if you trust the site, this error could mean that someone is tampering with your connection.

Don't add an exception unless you know there's a good reason why this site doesn't use trusted identification."

I hope that is of some help.

Thanks Chris

Hi Chris, this sounds like a change from the earlier situation where the certificate was for FiddlerRoot. Or maybe you found that information in the Add Exception dialog?

more options

Hi Jscher. The FiddlerRoot info was going to the "Add Exception" page which I was asked to do a while ago I think by you. Now I know how to do a screenshot here is a copy.

cor-el just asked me to look under Technical Details, then I Understand the Risks for the last information.

Sorry to confuse you. Chris

Hmmm, is Fiddler running hidden on your computer?

If you expand the little triangle in the Task Bar Notification Area (previously known as the system tray), can you activate Fiddler? Its icon is a rounded off square with a light brown side and a dark brown side separated by a white "{".

If you are able to display it, go into Tools > Fiddler Options > Appearance and make sure it is not set to hide when minimized. And then exit, if you are aren't using it.

more options

Hi again - I have checked and don't appear to have an icon of the description you give - in fact there are no brown ones at all. All seem to relate to Windows, Volume, Graphics, Bullguard, Audio. I have attached a pic.

I am going to bed now, in case you reply and don't get an answer from me. I will be back in the morning. Thanks Chris

Okay, let's try the Task Manager's processes tab.

Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager

On the processes tab, look for Fiddler.exe and if you find it, highlight it and Ed Process.

You may also need to expand the list to include Processes started by other users.

Anything?

Okay - I have looked and there is nothing in either under the name Fiddler.exe, but have copied both pages for you to see in case there is anything posing as such.

You can use the MSConfig program or the Autoruns utility to see which software and services are getting started.
