PROBLEM: Videos and Flash content hang in Firefox. The screen is grey and the twirling circle is frozen. This is a recent problem; this behavior is new and it is unclear what has changed in my system. 1. The problem does not occur with I.E. 2. Win8 , Firefox, and Flash plug-in are current. 3. Running Firefox in safe mode does not help. 4. I have removed and reinstalled Firefox , Flash, and RealPlayer 5. Java is working. temporary SOLUTION: Deleted RealPlayer

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for posting, although as pointed out that is not the intended purpose of this forum.

RealPlayer related software and Flashplayer have had issues in the past and we have documented this. I am not sure whether at the moment updating to current versions of Realplayer also fix the issue. Additionally on Windows >= Vista disabling FlashPlayer's protected mode may be a workaround.

If you do wish to help

  • note the more system details aside will give information if posters follow the prompts, you will be able to see who has FlashPlayer and Real Player installed.
  • Look through and consider posting in this thread

I will mark your reply as the thread solution then at least the thread shows as solved. edit, have left it open as now you say you do have a problem.

Sorry ComputerWhiz. This was my first ever post to a mozilla forum and I wanted to share what seemed to work in a way that would be easy to find by others with the same problem.

I spoke too soon in my original post. The problem is not solved after all. By uninstalling RealPlayer Flash content seemed to play normally until PC was rebooted. After rebooting, the problem continued: attempting to play Flash content would hang Firefox. I even reinstalled and then uninstalled RealPlayer. This time it did not help.

Thanks for the reply. The first screenshot is what appears when browsing with FireFox to a site having Flash content. (These same sites work normally with browsing there with I.E.) The second screen shoot is what appears when trying to see a YouTube clip. In both cases, the screens are frozen.

Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox are most probably caused by a recent Flash update and/or a malfunctioning browser plugin such as Real Player.

In order to remedy the problem, please perform the steps mentioned in these Knowledge Base articles:

Other, more technical information about these issues can be found under these Links:

Please report back soon.

Many thanks to all who have looked into my Flash issue and made helpful suggestions. I have studied each of the articles cited and believe that the proposed steps have been followed. So far Firefox still hangs when browsing to YouTube or sites with Flash content. It does not crash; it just freezes at those URLs, as shown in the previously posted screen shoots. To summarize what I've seen and done (several times in most cases) so far:

  1. . The problem does not occur with I.E.
  2. . Win8 , Firefox, and Flash plug-in are current.
  3. . Running Firefox in safe mode does not help, which may mean that add-in are not the problem.
  4. . I have removed and reinstalled Firefox , Flash, and RealPlayer
  5. . Java is working.
  6. . When RealPlayer was uninstalled, the problem seemed to be solved, however this lasted only during that session; after the next reboot, the problem continued. Reinstalling and re-uninstalling RealPlayer again had no apparent effect. It is currently not installed.
  7. . Starting fresh via the Reset feature had no apparent effect.
  8. . I have perused the " inside-flash-player-protected-mode-for-firefox" article but am unsure how to use that information.
  9. . I have used the Flash Player Settings Manager to confirm that no content blacking functions are activated and to clear all Flash local storage.
  10. . I was so far unable to disable Protect Mode in Flash, described in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071?tstart=0 as a "Last resort"; Win 8 says "access is denied" when attempting to save mms.cfg.
  11. . Screen shot of Firefox "Troubleshooting Information" is included below.
  12. . Screenshot of Firefox Profile Folder is included below.

So I am still stuck. Further suggestion gratefully received.

I am not using Windows at the moment but IIRC if there are problems with modifying mms.cfg

  • Try to ensure you are using an admin account
  • It may work if you
    1. Drag the file out; to say your Windows desktop;
    2. Edit it there
    3. And then drag it back to its original location

Update, Yes above is the method described in the articIe I linked to earlier

Many thanks again to John99, ComputerWhiz, and all who looked at my Flash problem. The main problem is now solved! Moving the flash config file to the desktop, editing to disable protected mode, and moving it back to the original location worked! More importantly, my main problem of being unable to see Flash content or YouTube videos has gone away! I tested this solution by re-enabling protected mode, which restored the problem, and then re-disabling it, which dispelled the problem. So, protected mode was the problem. I understand that operating Flash with protected mode disabled removes a desirable level of protection. While this seems like the lesser of two evils, it would be good to resolve that issue too.

That's good news Tim. Glad it is fixed and thanks for posting back.

This protected mode has been a problem for a while now. Sometimes the results are unexpected. It is only Windows and then only Vista and later that have this Adobe feature protected mode. I don't think there seems to be much the Mozilla developers can do about this.

I know the hang and crash reporting in Firefox Aurora has been improved in relation to Flash Player. I am not sure if/when that will get on to the Firefox Release. I am hoping at some date in the future it will help us in troubleshooting Flash Issues
