The first click on some webpages opens an ad in another tab
I have been experiencing this problem for a few weeks now and I've been searching the internet for an answer but I cant find any information about it anywhere. Basically this is what happens:
1. I'll go to some webpage, it doesn't matter which page or what website its on, it seems to happen randomly from time to time. 2. I'll notice that when I mouse-over any of the links on the page that the mouse doesn't turn into the little pointing finger, the mouse just continues to look like the regular arrow. 3. The first click I make ANYWHERE on the page will cause an ad to open up in another tab and it will switch to that tab. 4. I close the tab and go back to my original tab and the page works normally now.
I have removed or disabled all suspicious looking addons, and I have also uninstalled a program that looked suspicious. I also ran a scan with Malwarebytes and it found a few 'infections' but the problem persists even after removing them. I know that the ads aren't part of the pages I visit. For example I was filling out a job application for Del Taco or something and I had this problem on one of the pages. Also I run a website and it even happens on my own website sometimes! Also just today Firefox randomly shutdown for no reason at all, one second I'm watching a Youtube video, the next second and looking at my desktop. No error, no nothing. I restarted Firefox and It gave me the "Well this is embarrassing" page. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW I'm using Windows 7 64 bit

hello, from the system information you've provided, your profile looks clean so far (except for the general crawler addon which is malicious but shows up as disabled, so it should have no effect). however, it would be interesting if you replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once?
please also look if the crashes you've described have produced any crash reports - enter about:crashes into the location bar, and see if there are recent reports listed there. if so, copy the latest few report ids from there & paste them here into a forum reply...
https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/pending/b72fccab-0f52-48a5-9357-5749a2130227 is the only actual report but it was a few months back, there are other reports but they all say something about throttling...
anyway I'll try the safe mode thing that you suggested and also is there any way to remove that crawler addon? I wanted to remove it but the only option that it gave me was to disable it
What is this extension: SQLlite Addon 3.2?
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

ups, sorry - yes the id of the sqlite addon certainly looks shady too (one shouldn't get fooled by the innocent sounding name). in regards to the general crawler piece of junk, please also see Cannot remove an add-on (extension or theme) for some methods of manual removal!

Well ive been using saef mode for about 20 minutes now and i havent had the problem for as long as ive been in safe mode. i removed the SQLite thing and this other thing that didnt seem to be in my system details called DownloadTerms. I cant seem to figure out how to remove that stupid Crawler thing though... I Followed the instructions that you gave me the link to but I it doesnt look like the folder even exists... the extension ID is gencrawler@some.com
the extension might also be installed via the windows registry as it is described at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_add-ons#Windows_Registry_extension
I was unable to find anything about it within the registry, I'm going to run a full scan with malwarebytes and I'll be back when its done
other users at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/809712 for example have reported, that general crawler might reside within \extensions\{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384} inside your profile folder - if this folder is present in your case, just delete it.
i did find a folder like that and deleted it but crawler still shows up in firefox... also the malwarebytes scan finished and it only found 1 item but i think it was something unrelated because crawler is still showing up, maybe the problem i was having is fixed now though so i guess I'll find out soon
Did you check this registry key?
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\
You can also check if this key is under HKEY_CURRENT_USER
I checked that registry key but there wasnt a \Extensions\ sub-key
I've encountered the same problem and have tried the suggestions above to no avail. Anyone have another suggestion? I don't want to return to using IE!
Did you try to disable all extensions?
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

i havent had the problem since i did all the stuffi said above so i think its fixed now
I've run several different malware programs; checked and removed a suspicious registry key; created a new profile; and turned off all addons. I've rebooted numerous times. After all that, it seemed to slow down the number of times the mouse-over links disappear, but I'm still occasionally getting routed to various ads.
I ran firefox in "safe mode" for several days and never saw any ads pop-up. After going back into normal mode the pop-up ads stopped.
I looked at your system information, but did not see any add blocking add-ons. Are you using any? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ There is a Firefox option to not allow redierction <Firefox options, Advanced, General, Warn me when web sites.................> There is also an add-on I think.
I might have found the solution - seems to work for me so far.
Tools - Options - Security Then click on 'Exceptions' next to 'Warn me when sites try to install ad-ons'.
I found two 'exceptions' that Mozilla had put in itself, that seemed to relate to ads. I removed them and since then - no ad webpages opening up.
Hope this helps
