Print URL at top/ bottom of page is too small & half off the page

more options

I set it to print URL and Title at top of the page, and Date at the bottom of the page. It attempts to do this but the print is verrry small and 1/2 off the page.

Works fine with Google Chrome.

New WF 2540 printer, test page is good. Mac 10X

Thanks for your help!

Peter

The header and footer font size is always small. Last time I looked, I couldn't find a way to override the default size of 10 other than choosing a font that is inherently larger than Times New Roman as your default serif font. See: Can I possibly enlarge the headers and footers in Firefox's "Page Setup" menu to enlarge it so I can see it better...or is it something I'm gonna have to deal with being SO SMALL. I didn't check for an add-on solution; you could try searching for one on the Addons site.

Regarding the position on the page, some printers do not allow you to get all the way to the edge of the sheet. If that is the problem, you might be able to fix it in your system's general settings dialog for your printer. I don't see a way to access that from the Mac's print dialog (Firefox print dialog screen shots in this article: How to print web pages in Firefox), so you might have to find it in system settings.

If that doesn't work, there are some preferences that Firefox stores with names similar to the following. In these settings, 25 = 1/4 inch (the value is divided by 100).

  • print.printer_BrandX.print_unwriteable_margin_top
  • print.printer_BrandX.print_edge_top

To tweak these, you can use the about:config preferences editor. In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful. Then use some of the more unique terms (e.g., unwrit or edge) to filter the list.

You should update to the latest version.

If you cannot see any content on pages you printed or in print preview, the cause might be margins which are set too high.

  1. In order to check the margins, we need to go to File > Page Setup.
  2. Once this is done, switch to the Margins & Header/Footer tab.
  3. Check what's set there under Margins.

The following are the default values for Margins:

Right: 12.7

Top: 12.7

Left: 12.7

Bottom: 12.7

Check these values accordingly and change them if necessary.

Feer56, Thanks for responding but on my Mac 10.x and Mozilla 18.0 I have no option to go to Page Set Up from File.....

more options

Go to Firefox button/ File -> hover over print -> select page setup.

I only get the Print Screen that has the options to add the URL , Title and Date to the header and footer, but no option to set Page Margins.

Chrome does the job , no problems, and the printer test page is good.....

Hi feer56, on MacOS, the print-related dialogs are quite different than on Windows. Also, the margins you can modify through the Page Setup dialog on Windows are the margins for the content, not the headers/footers. Unfortunately, there's no shortcut around about:config. See my earlier post.

As jscher2000 said, follow his post as he is more experienced that me and can help you better. :) Thanks!

feer56 and jscher2000, Thanks so much for your inputs! jscher, thanks for chiming in , but not being a techie, I'll not risk messing with the about:config solution that you kindly suggested.

Probably will just wander off to Chrome.

Mmm I wonder if someone from Google could call over to Chrome and ask them how they did it, can't be that hard....

Be well,

Hi phstol, entering a value in about:config isn't very technically demanding and takes less than 60 seconds. You just need to take a deep breath when you see that long list of settings and focus in on the ones you want to change. Double-click and you can enter a number like 20 or 25. I'd try the top and bottom print edges first and see whether that makes any difference. (Hopefully you have a PDF printer driver so the experiments don't waste too much paper.) Good luck.

Hi jscher2000, Thanks for your patience, it was as you said, easy to do, and it worked :) !!. I was also able to adjust the left and right margins.

NOw I have an associated issue that has been an irritation with Firefox on previous printers also, if you would bear with me.... When printing from a web site or a blog (including this one as an example), Page 2 and all following pages are printed in a large scale "zoomed in" , and offset up to 1/2 a page to the right so that the offset part is not printed/visible. If I print one page at a time so that each page is Page 1, they print OK.

Suggestions?

Thanks again,

Hi phstol, could you give some sample URLs with this problem? This particular page has a very unstylized look when I print it to PDF; all the column layout vanishes and its just a linear dump. So I can't re-create the problem on this forum.
