Why won't Dictionary.com or Google Image Search show up in my search bar after adding them, even after restarting?
A couple of days ago, I had to backup, erase and reinstall everything on my computer in order to fix a bug. I made sure to save my Firefox bookmarks, and re-added them after transferring Firefox back over to my computer from the external hard drive when I had backed it up. I also had to re-add all the search engines that I rely on regularly in my Search bar. But for some reason, Dictionary.com and Google Image Search would not show in the Search Bar, even after adding them and restarting Firefox. Can anyone help?

Hello Nightscream,
The Mycroft Project gives you access to hundreds of different search engines all in one place, you can install the search engines you want from the Mycroft Project . see :Adding search engines
dictionary.com = http://mycroftproject.com/search-engines.html?name=dictionary.com
(see the 3th and 4th in dictionaries area)
Google Images = http://mycroftproject.com/search-engines.html?name=google+search+image (the 2nd one)
IMDB = http://mycroftproject.com/imdb-search-plugins.html (find the language you want and install)
thanks again

Hello Nightscream, how re-add the search engines, did you try from :
http://mycroftproject.com/search-engines.html?name=dictionary.com
http://mycroftproject.com/search-engines.html?name=google+search+image
thank you
I'm sorry, I don't understand what in the information on those web pages is for. Can you clarify?
You can try delete the search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Delete it from where? How do I do this? I found the phrase "search.json" on that page you linked to, but no indication of where that file is kept in my Firefox or how to delete it.

How do I determine this? All the extensions are listed as disabled.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder
I found the profile folder, and I deleted the search.json file and search.sqlite file as you suggested, and not only did it not allow me to add the search engines I have been trying to add, but it made the problem worse: It reset the Search Bar entirely, removing some of the search engines that I had already added to the Search Bar in the process, and when I tried to re-add them, it wouldn't let me re-add the YouTube and IMDB search engines. So instead of there being two search engines that I couldn't add to the bar, now there are four.
UPDATE: Okay, something weird happened subsequent to the above post. The YouTube search showed up in the "Suggested" search engine line, enabling me to add it back in. I don't know how or why that happened. So now it's just three engines I can't use: Google Images, Dictionary.com and IMDB.

Firefox should rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the searchplugins folder in the Firefox program folder and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.
So if xml files of the missing search engines aren't there then you may have security software interfering with this.

Thank you, Ideato!!!!!! I can't believe it's finally fixed!
One question, though: the Google Image search is called "Google Advanced Image Search UK". Why does it say "UK"? Is its search results based on searches in the UK? Will the search results not be the same as those performed in the US?
After using the plugin, check the URL. Does it land on google.co.uk? That might be preferable for U.K. residents but could indeed rank the results differently than the .com site. If you want one that lands on google.com, you might need to shop a bit more. Of course, they also are editable, and changing .co.uk to .com might be an easy edit (I haven't checked myself).
Yes, it did land on google.co.uk. I wasn't sure how to shop around more, since there were only three search hits on that page, but I tried searching for "Google Image" instead of "Google Image Search", and I think that did the trick.
Thanks, jscher2000!
(Looks like you've found this already but in case others follow...) Better Google Images link: http://mycroftproject.com/search-engines.html?name=google+images
