Whenever I click on a search result, the browser will then go to a completely different page.
I will search for something in the window on the top right of my browser. then when i click on the results of the search, a website completely unrelated will open up. how do i stop this?

It would seem that your computer is infected. Have you run a virus scan and found nothing?
If nothing is found, try installing and running MalwareBytes to see if it finds any problems.
If everything seems clean, try disabling all Add-ons in Firefox to see if that helps. Be sure to re-enable Add-ons after resolving the problem.
Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
