Firefox will freeze at random. Not only does the browser freeze, my entire OS seems to be affected as well. My mouse will move, and I can get the start menu to pop up, but that is about it. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work.

If i click on the Firefox window, it turns gray, says "not responding", then after about 45 seconds of waiting, it recovers. Occasionally it doesn't recover and I have to do a hard reboot.

At first i thought this was a flash issue, however it happens at random with no repeating pattern.

Firefox Version 16.0.2

Addons installed:

AdblockPlus DownloadStatusBar SearchStatus

I love firefox for its customization abilities, but this is really killing my experience as it happens at least once every 15 minutes or so.

Any ideas?

Also, if this is happening with a lot of programs opened + if you have sufficient RAM, you can try to temporarily disable the page file (Windows Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Settings (the topmost one) > Advanced > Change > No Paging File, restart Windows and check.

Hi,

If you have security software (antivirus, firewall etc.) installed, you can try deleting all existing instances of Firefox and its related processes/files in all the different configuration modules/areas of the security software like process monitoring, sub/spawned process control, virtualization, HIPS etc., in addition to the security software's main configuration panel. Instead create new fully allowed/trusted rules for Firefox + its related processes in all the different modules/panels - a genuine/original Firefox installer as well as all the installed EXEs (Application) and DLLs (Application extension) are digitally signed by Mozilla Corporation (right-click > Properties > Digital Signatures). Even otherwise, some security software may also ask again when Firefox and/or its sub processes are started, and you may be able to allow/trust at that time. Please see this.

Just a heads up. I have uninstalled MSE and removed all other antivirus, even as far as disabling the firewall. The issue still happened.

I even installed the latest build on a fresh install of Win 7 64 bit. Still experiencing the issues. It isnt flash as this is happening on pages and websites that do not have any flash content.

Also, this freezes my whole system, including other programs, which is wierd as I dont see any major cpu/ram draw either. It just stalls for about 30 seconds, then somehow fixes itself.

Following are two posts I made in early December. It's now January and the same problem is still occurring. Since Mozilla has clearly decided to ignore this issue I have no alternative but to change to Chrome. Already moved all mu bookmarks but I was sure hoping for a solution. I have been a Firefox/Thunderbird user for years.

This has been an ongoing problem and none of the proposed solutions has worked for me. I have FF16.0.2 and Flash 11.5.502.110 on a Windows 7 (64bit) machine. The problem is maddening. I use Chrome but i REALLY don't like it. Can Mozilla and Adobe please work out some solution. I'm not a computer guy but if flash works OK on Chrome and IE doesn't that mean the issue is with FF??? FF17.0.1 installed today. No change. The first you tube video stalled right away. If you roll the mouse over the video it catches up but stalls again. You have to keep moving the mouse. I am about to give up totally and just succumb to IE.

I had a very similar problem for ages. On three different machines all with different operating systems.

I cleared out my account, I reset firefox, did a fresh install, got rid of flash, deleted my profile, etc etc etc. Nothing worked.

Then what I did worked. What I did was copy firefox.exe as firefox2.exe

I then ran firefox2, the problem disappeared, I then set firefox not to be the default browser and everything now is sweet.

This can be an indication that you have malware that targets the firefox.exe program.
Security software that needs an update is another candidate.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

I did this before, I ran MSE, Malwarebytes, superantispyware and Glary Utilities. All found nothing.

Also why would it be the same problem on three machines one with XP, VISTA and WIN7. The only thing they have in common is firefox and MSE, as I transfer little between them.

Possibly the problem is in MSE.

Did some tests, can ensure you that my issue was not anti-virus or firewall related.

I was finally able to narrow it down to the Bookmarks. I am not sure why, but when importing my backed-up bookmarks from a previous install, the issue happened every time. When i did not import my bookmarks, everything ran perfectly.

So, i manually moved over my bookmarks, and ever since, ive had no problems with freezing windows (knock on wood)
