I had virtually the identical problem after update to Firefox 14. Firefox would not load, even in safe mode. Similar problem signature:

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Please review and follow Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again if the problem is Flash in particular.

i uninstalled it. should i reinstall it again and follow these steps? thanks.

It would be appreciated if you provided the crash ID(s). If not, there's no real way for mozilla to fix the problem.

1342827077 is not a crash ID, but the time that the crash occurred (Fri, 20 Jul 2012 23:31:17 GMT).

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more crash reports that have this format:

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx
  • You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.
  • You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.

this is the only information inside the crash report. thats all. in the location you told me to go to. the only file in crash reports folder is called InstallTime20120713134347 and i already pasted the info inside it. I uninstalled firefox when i was having a problem and this is what happens during reinstall. i cant open it. the browser wont open it closes down immediately. sorry, just am not understanding where to go for the intended info. I open up the mozilla crash reports folder, there is only one file in it and I wrote the name above and the file only has the date. there is no other information in the file. this is all i get Problem signature:

I'm also getting the exact same crash. Can't start Firefox even in safe mode.

It doesn't create any crash reports.

Yes. You can copy the places.sqlite file to another profile folder to get the bookmarks and history or restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can make Firefox create an automatic HTML backup (bookmarks.html) when you exit Firefox if you set the browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML pref to true on the about:config page.

That backup is created by default in the profile folder as bookmarks.html, but you can set the file name and path via the browser.bookmarks.file pref on the about:config page.

The browser.bookmarks.file pref doesn't exist by default and you need to create a new String pref with the name browser.bookmarks.file and set the value to the full path of the backup bookmarks file.

i started using chrome and explorer but once i uninstalled prevx firefox loaded normally. thanks much Ecgfrith and to all the others who posed solutions. i definitely would say prevx and new firefox are incompatible.

Thanks, mogilyan! You solved my problem! Specifically, it's Prevx's Safe Online that causes the crash, according to Prevx's support:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=328862

You don't need to uninstall Prevx. Just right click on the Prevx icon in the system tray, click on Configure Monitoring, then click on Status and find SafeOnline under Security Status on the right side. Click Configure next to Safe Online and then turn it off using the icons at the top.

Now I still get Prevx's scanning for virus and malware and Firefox again works well!

I was at my wits end rolling back and forth between flash installs, I uninstalled FF 14.0.1 completely as well as flash. Did a COMPLETE install of 14.0.1 (not an update) and flash 11.4.402.265. It's been 5 days now and **knock on wood** not a crash yet!

more options

OK I'm having the exact same issue only I don't see the Prevx in the system tray. Are you talking Windows 7 tray or somewhere else?

more options

I did a search for "prevx show in system tray", and I found the problem but not answer. This is assuming you've installed prevx and haven't unchecked the "show icon in system" tray setting" under Basic Configuration, and that you're also looking at any hidden system tray icons (I always like to see all icons in the system tray).

Since someone has noted this Firefox problem present with Flash, your problem could be due to some other program. If it's some other program, first step is to boot into safe mode (with networking support if you want to use your browser), and if the problem with Firefox does not appear, then systematically disable startup items and do other safe mode troubleshooting.

What I'd try next (before safe mode test) is uninstalling prevx, and then re-installing it. Before you re-install prevx, might want to check to see if that cures the problem in Firefox. If so, re-install prevx and disable the Prevx SafeOnline part.

Keep in mind that since prevx does not use virus definition updates but rather scans file sizes, you can also install Microsoft Security Essentials (also free) without conflict with prevx; whereas, you shouldn't run two virus scanners that use virus definitions to detect virii. I say this because some people are queasy about running their computers without virus protection. I run both on my machines.

Just found out how to show Prevx settings if no icon in the sytem tray. Go to the Start menu, and in the prevx folder there is a prevx icon -- this will bring up the configure utility for prevx. See if that still works before uninstalling prevx.
