I'm glad all is working. That second address does need to be a full address, not an alias, to work. Aliases only really work in input, and that is controlled by the email provider, not Thunderbird. Regards, david

Thank you very much for your reply - my problem has been resolved by entering a new password to my UPC-account, and entering the same on the Thunderbird client account settings (Thunderbird updated to version 52.6.0). i-Mac OS 10.13.
Apparently there is a difference between the Web-Portal UPC, treating my account on an IMAP basis, however I prefer Thunderbird client which treats my Mails as a pop-server, i.e. all the files are kept locally on my i-Mac.
There is a single issue remaining : I am able to use a third identity, notably the EPFL-alumni forwarding address
[edited]@a3.epfl.ch
everything under the same password as the main account; receiving E-mails functions, but sending E-mails under this identity has not yet been re-established.
Any suggestion about this issue ?

A number of email providers now require a separate password when accessed from a PC client, and email providers have generally been slow in explaining that to its users. I'm glad yours is resolved. A reminder: an IMAP account on the PC stilll sync's to the server. That is, if a message is deleted from the server, it will be removed from the PC hard drive. My guess - and that's all it is - is that the second email address is an alias. As such, it works for incoming, but not outgoing. For outgoing, try using the same SMTP server settings as the other account to see if that works.

I tried to use the alias a3-address as a reply address to my main address, which immediately functioned !
Independent sending from the a3-address should of course work as before, but am at the moment not in the position to test this to completeness.
