If you go to the Settings page, Home panel, toward the bottom you can find the checkbox for "Recent activity". Could you check whether that is enabled/selected?

I've done that 3 times with no results, the tab page shows all the squares but are greyed out with no inner action, just blank faded squares. I added 4 lines and they are all the same, dead squares.

Hmm, is history working normally if you check the menu? Either:

• menu button > History
• History sidebar (Ctrl+H)
• History drop-down menu (Alt+S)

If Firefox can't display any history and/or doesn't accumulate any history, could you take a look at this thread:

Based on your results, your history should be present. I assume it shows up in the Library window (Ctrl+Shift+H). If you check or add the Most Recent Visit column there (right-click the Name or Location column heading to show a list of available columns), I assume it has some history from the past week, it's not only older history that might no longer be considered Recent?
