The error message is coming from email provider; thunderbird is only sharing that with you. If the password works when logging on online, then it may be that the provider uses app passwords or that the server settings may be incorrect. Sharing the full text of the error message sometimes help, as does a screenshot of appropriate server settings, whether input or output.
