Good afternoon Mozilla!

Hope all is well.

I wonder if you could please kindly help me.

Major issue on my Director's laptop. He uses Firefox on a daily basis and has several bookmarks, history, etc... Also when he searches for an specific company/supplier (we have over 3000) they come up and once we are on said supplier's website the account logins are recognized enabling easy and pain-free access.

Since the major issue, Laptop had been refreshed (Microsoft Windows 10 - kept all files and apps and got rid of the explorer issue where any folder within the Laptop would crash after few seconds)... Even bringing back the old profile my director can no longer access history, nor bookmarks and when searching automatic login to supplier websites is no longer there...

I used a software called Veeam Agent to do an Image of his entire Laptop on the 10.02.2022. I would bring back the whole ISO image and hopefully things would go back to what it use to be (most likely the Folder/Explorer Issue would also come back)... however he insists in just getting Firefox going ON again...

I have created a new profile and imported/copied/pasted all info I found on Veeam... there where contents of Firefox under Profiles on Local and Roaming locations within the C Drive.

Also followed this... but it did not help...

Can you please kindly help me? Kindest Regards Paulo

Hello,

To ensure, did you set the default profile to the new profile in Firefox?

If you did, ensure that you got the data from the folder called *.default-release. This is the default profile location.

If these did not work, you may need an older backup.

Hi Amelia,

Many thanks for your help.

Basically the URL address bar no longer holds the information when typing... for instance if typing A would automatically give you few options including amazon.co.uk. However once I manually type amazon.co.uk it still holds the password (autofill details) and automatically inserts it in...

I have tried everything I can think of... including creating a new profile and copying everything from a previous backup...

I have a feeling a tool like CCleaner was used and cleared all cache/history/temp files etc not only on Firefox, but Windows too... maybe this URL information is save somewhere else? no matter what I do can not get the URL info back.

Any ideas?

Your help is much appreciated.

Regards Paulo

Did you possibly use System Restore on Windows as that can corrupt the Firefox installation ? Note that Windows might create a C:\Windows.old folder with your previous personal data.

Note that only the main/root profile location in "AppData\Roaming" where your personal data is stored is important.

Hi Paulo, the address bar autofill draws from a table in the places.sqlite database, which also stores bookmarks and history visits. It sounds like it's all related.

It's possible that Firefox could not work with the places.sqlite database file you recovered from the backup image and dropped into the currently live profile folder. In such cases, Firefox may rename the file places.sqlite-corrupt and generate a new one.

Normally, Firefox would rebuild the database just from the latest bookmark backup in the bookmarkbackups folder in the profile. Since the bookmarks also are not working, it sounds a lot like an ongoing database problem.

This is my usual starting point for that:

First, if you haven't already, please do a normal shutdown and/or restart of your system. Restarting Windows can help by freeing up locked files, completing any deferred updates, and resolving temporary file permission issues.

Next, if Firefox still has bookmark problems, could you let us know what you get when you run the "Verify Integrity" diagnosis and repair function. That's here:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say that, or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.

I am afraid I have not attempted a system restore. I have however gone back to old profiles via saved backups.

+ Table moz_origins has 508 records + Table moz_places has 4180 records + Table moz_historyvisits has 4765 records + Table moz_inputhistory has 15 records + Table moz_bookmarks has 84 records

Actually, there is a good amount of data in there. 84 bookmarks, and 508 origins -- I think the origins are used for the address bar autofill. Are those still nowhere to be found?

Hi. Yes for whatever reason when one types it does not offer or suggest the know/many used websites...

Also it seems now that anything searched "new" (when you search a new company few times, eventually it suggests it next time) this is not happening... :(... To say the least... Frustrating!!!

Many thanks for the help and ideas... anything else you may suggest?

Do you have both Bookmarks and History selected in the Address Bar settings? See: Address bar autocomplete suggestions in Firefox -- "How can I control..." section.

Hi Jscher2000

I have checked and can confirm all options are selected.

I still think that somehow CCleaner cleared all cache and information messing everything up...

I do not know if my director was logged in to Firefox before... he is now. I can see an account linked. Would this cause issues? I suppose it's better to have a firefox/mozilla account signed in... right?

With only one device connected to a Firefox account that is not much value/benefit because Sync is not designed to be used as a backup, but is meant to Sync data across connected devices. It is always best to avoid using external cleanup software, but if necessary use built-in means. If you suspect that the profile is corrupted then best is to create a new profile and copy trusted data from the old profile to the new profile.
